YA-WAMF 2.23.1

YA-WAMF 2.23.1 fixes the problems people found right after 2.23.0, and makes the setup wizard safer for
anyone installing for the first time. Small Birds and Medium Birds can be activated again, Needs your
call
now counts everything waiting, and the wizard no longer lets a small slip leave a new feeder quietly
misconfigured.

What's fixed

  • Small Birds and Medium Birds activate again after a fresh download. Since v2.22.0 they could stop
with "model files are missing or incomplete", and downloading them again did not help. If you added
labels.txt by hand as a workaround, you can leave it there or remove it.
  • Needs your call counts everything waiting. It used to look at your newest 50 detections, so on a busy
day older visits dropped out of the count and the review, and it could say nothing was waiting when
something was. It now covers the whole 24 hours and every new species. If it cannot check, it says so.
Work through the queue handles up to 500 at a time and tells you if more are left.
  • Confirmed species show in the Explorer. Cards and rows now carry the Owner confirmed mark the
Dashboard already had, in grouped visits and single captures. A grouped visit shows it when any of its
captures was confirmed, even if the photo on the card is a different one.

A safer setup wizard

These matter most on a new install. Settings → Setup wizard also opens the same steps at any time.

  • Validating a model no longer switches to it. On a new install where no model had been chosen, the
model being checked became the live one and stayed live after a restart, even if you pressed Back or
Skip. This also applied to validating from Model Manager. Now only Continue or activating it changes
    the model.
  • It asks which region Small and Medium Birds are for. With no country saved, these models used the
North American species list everywhere without saying so. The model step now offers
Bird model region, says which list will run, and warns when Auto has no country to go on.
  • Your cameras are listed for you. A mistyped camera name used to be accepted, and YA-WAMF then ignored
your real cameras. You now tick the cameras Frigate reports. Typing is only offered when Frigate's list
cannot be read, and the step warns that those names cannot be checked.
  • It keeps your place. Reloading part way through used to drop you on the Dashboard with setup unfinished.
The wizard now returns to the step you reached until you finish or skip it, and Review in the summary
comes straight back to the summary.
  • The summary says what is really set up. BirdNET-Go is on by default, so it no longer reads as
configured until it has a URL. The model row names the model actually running.
  • Clearer model checks. Small and Medium Birds are labelled Experimental rather than Planned, and a failed
check says why instead of also showing a green completion.

Before you update

  • No special steps. Back up /config and /data as usual, then wait for the container health check to
pass. This update has no database migration and needs no setting changes.
  • Check your model if you installed recently and never chose one. If you validated a model on a new install,
it may have become your live model without you selecting it, and this update will not change it back.
Settings → Detection → Models shows what is running.
  • Check the region if you use Small or Medium Birds outside North America. With no country saved they have
been using the North American list. Set Bird model region under Settings → Detection to Europe if
that is where your feeder is. Changing it does not alter your existing history.
  • Unsuffixed image tags remain the full compatibility image. See the
    provider-family guidance
before choosing an optional CPU, Intel or CUDA image.

Good to know

  • Needs your call and the Explorer count different things. The queue covers 24 hours and includes
low-confidence names and new species. The Explorer defaults to all history, so the two numbers will not match.
  • A new unknown bird can take up to a minute to reach the queue on a busy feeder. Routine arrivals read it
at most every 15 seconds, and it is also refreshed every minute. Your own decisions update it straight away.
  • A Frigate that requires a sign-in still uses FRIGATE_AUTH_TOKEN. There is no field for it in the app.
The wizard's Frigate test now explains this when it fails. See
    environment variables.
  • How this was checked. The wizard fixes were run from start to finish on a fresh install with a CPU image and
a simulated Frigate. They have not been run on Intel or CUDA hardware, or against live detections.

Thanks

  • @Blorti for reporting that Small and Medium Birds would not activate in
#919, and for spotting that the confirmed
mark was missing from the Explorer in #918.
  • @miroslawkluz for the numbers in
#917 that made the Needs your call
undercount easy to track down, and for offering to retest.
