YA-WAMF 2.23.0 is for anyone whose feeder sees more than it can name correctly. It can now check
identifications against the birds recorded in your region, find small birds in wide frames, and be
honest when a count is only a minimum. An optional beta also gives the other animals in your garden
a home of their own, away from your bird history.
What's new
- Garden animals, as an optional beta. Foxes, cats, hedgehogs and other visitors get their own
review in the Explorer, separate from your bird history. Turn it on under
Settings → Beta features, where Still to set up lists anything it still needs. Animals
scoring above your Naming threshold are named automatically. Photos it cannot name move to
Dismissed, where you can return them to review. Confirmed animals keep their photograph, and
can send alerts through your existing channels. It is off until you turn
it on. See Garden animals. - A range filter for birds that could not be at your feeder. With a location and an eBird API
key, Settings → Detection → Range filter checks each new automatic identification against
every species eBird has recorded in your county, state or country. An out-of-range name falls back
to the model's best in-range answer. If there is none, the visit is listed under
Recently set aside so you can still record a real vagrant by hand. It is off by default,
previews what it would set aside, and your existing history is not changed. See
Range filter. - A bird finder for wide frames, and counts that say when they are unsure. Wide frame
(RF-DETR Nano) under Settings → Detection → Models → Bird finder reads the whole frame plus
four overlapping tiles. On two hand-checked sets of feeder frames it found 42 of 52 and 58 of 64
birds, against 12 of 52 and 16 of 64 for the standard finder at its counting floor. With it,
Find more birds counts only the boxes the finder is confident about, says
At least 2 birds confirmed in this frame, and shows you each area it did not count and why.
It is a 103 MB download and about five detector passes per frame, so the standard finder stays
the default. - Find a visit by typing. The Explorer has one search box for species and groups of species,
in your language, English or scientific names, plus cameras, days such as "yesterday" and a
pasted event ID. See
Search the Explorer. - A family tree that is about your feeder. Each species you have seen shows your own newest
photograph, its visits and whether BirdNET heard it. Its card adds first and last seen, its IUCN
Red List category and its names in other languages. The tree also reads like a field guide now,
and works with the arrow keys. - Names corrected by a closer look. When the first name came from one distant whole frame, and
crops from at least two separate moments agree on another species, the visit is renamed. Your own
choices, and visits you have hidden, are never replaced. A recording frame can also wait for a
better moment with Initial identification delay.
Smoother everyday use
- A failing Intel GPU no longer takes the queue with it. A worker that hits a device fault now
keeps the original error, retires safely and hands its work to CPU recovery, with live detections
going first. Crop detectors run in their own processes too, so a native crash cannot take down
the app. After a host, driver or image update, the bird finder re-checks the devices it passed
before instead of staying on the CPU. - Confirmed species are visible at a glance. Dashboard visits show a worded checkmark when you
confirmed the species, so you no longer open each one to find out. - Needs your call says more about what is waiting. It now names species the range check has
flagged, with a link to their review, and it never says "Nothing waiting on you" while that check
is still loading or failed. On a busy feeder it can still miss visits, as described under
Good to know. - Faster, steadier pages. The leaderboard no longer fails to load on large histories, Settings
opens faster, Space used measures large libraries without timing out and no longer reads 0 MB
when it could not measure, and the Dashboard stops downloading the full species list on every
refresh. - Add observation keeps the real time. An uploaded photo or video is saved with when it was
taken, not when you pressed Save, and uploading the same file again offers the saved record. - Distances follow your display units. Range check messages now read "within 31 mi" under
Imperial or British units, like the rest of the app. - Easier on phones, keyboards and screen readers. The Dashboard fits a 320 px phone at the
largest text sizes, plurals read correctly in every language, colours mean the same on every
screen, and failed loads say so instead of claiming there is nothing to show. - Tighter privacy and credentials.
- Changing your owner credentials now signs out existing sessions.
- Precise eBird CSV exports need owner access.
- Map popups show external text as text.
- Credentials are kept out of logs, diagnostics and error messages on more paths.
- Saved configuration files are private to their owner, and a failed settings save leaves your
running settings unchanged.
Before you update
- Back up
/configand/datafirst. This update applies database migrations on startup. An
older image may not understand them, so changing only the tag is not a rollback. See the
upgrade and rollback guide. - No settings need changing. Garden animals and the range filter are off until you turn them on,
and your bird finder, model and cameras stay as they are. Active Cameras is now
Settings → Connection → Cameras to watch, using the same saved choices. - Check anything that reads your config file from another account. The next settings save makes
config.jsonprivate to its owner. A separate backup job or script running as a different user may
lose read access. - Keep your image family unless you mean to change it. Unsuffixed tags remain the full
compatibility image. Optional CPU, Intel and CUDA variants are described in
Hardware Acceleration.
Good to know
- Small Birds and Medium Birds cannot be activated after a fresh download. If you downloaded
either one on v2.22.0 or later, it can stop with "model files are missing or incomplete".
Downloading it again does not help, and a copy you already had keeps working. A fix is planned for
v2.23.1. Until then, use another model, or follow the workaround in
#919. - Needs your call can undercount on a busy feeder. It only looks at your newest 50 detections, so
on a busy day older visits can drop out of the count and the review, and it can say nothing is
waiting when something is. Nothing is lost, and those visits are still in the Explorer. A fix is
planned for v2.23.1, tracked in
#917. - "At least N" will be common with the wide-frame finder. On one busy test feeder, about a quarter
of scans ended that way. It is the intended result, because uncounted areas are never added to your
count. Two limits remain: a faint bird on its own is listed rather than counted, and two separate
confident boxes on one bird still count twice
(#734 stays open for this). - The wide-frame finder's device depends on your host. It was checked on CPU and Intel CPU, GPU
and NPU. On NVIDIA CUDA it stays on the CPU unless it passes the device check on your own machine. - The range filter has real limits. Its list covers all seasons, so a summer visitor counts as
present all year. It filters nothing if the list is missing, out of date or eBird is unreachable,
and the card says which. eBird receives your location rounded to about 11 km. - Garden animals is still a beta. It needs its own model downloads and a country for automatic
naming. Dismissing a capture, returning it to review or a person event overlapping it deletes its kept
files. Moving a Garden capture back to birds is not available yet. - Domestic birds are a small, specific case. The bird model knows only wild species, so it names
a hen as a Red Junglefowl. If you keep birds like these, Domestic birds you keep sends them to
Garden. Only declare what you keep: declaring domestic ducks also moves wild Mallards. See
Domestic birds. - A confident whole-frame name is now accepted. It no longer always waits in Needs your call.
Low-confidence ones still do, and the record still says where the name came from. - Not in this release. Running several models together
(#804) and FP16 inference for
large Intel GPU models
(#723) are still open. - The original #490 fault is
still unconfirmed. The recovery work above should help, but it has not been retested on the
reported hardware.
Thanks
This release leans heavily on people who took the time to report, test and test again.
- @aav7fl for the persistent Intel GPU investigation in
#712: diagnostic bundles,
kernel logs, the analysis that pointed at device resets, and retests right up to a queue 50 deep on
EVA-02. That work led to the GPU recovery above and to the open FP16 proposal in
#723. Also for reporting and
retesting the GPU telemetry gaps in
#778, and for testing the
quarantine work in #722, which
stays open. - @byrnes-patrick for trying Garden animals early and reporting
unavailable snapshots with screenshots in
#698, the wrong Space used
figure in #755, the leaderboard
failure in #762 and the
distance units in #911, with
diagnostic bundles and retests of the fixes. - @giulianob for the request behind the range filter in
#696, the request that led to
Initial identification delay in
#743, and the multiple-model
idea in #804, which stays open. - @Blorti for asking to see confirmed species on the Dashboard in
#791. - @Milirey for the backfill and live-feed report and support bundles in
#490, which still shape the
recovery work while the original fault stays open for confirmation.
