The shell's icons are the 256-colour ones. The tool that bakes the Windows 2000 icons into the programs asked the image library for each icon size and trusted it to hand back the deepest colour depth. It hands back the shallowest. So 30 of the shell's icons -- folders, My Computer, the drives, the Recycle Bin, Programs, Documents, Settings, Search, Help, Run, Shut Down, Log Off, Control Panel, Paint, the desktop, Windows Update, the bitmap, HTML and zip documents, Favorites, Fonts, Printers, Scheduled Tasks and more -- were their dithered 16-colour versions at both sizes, and the Information and Warning icons in message boxes were the black-and-white frame: a mono "i" and "!". Every one of them is now the frame Windows 2000 shows at 256 colours and up: smooth folders, a blue "i", a yellow "!".
