1.37.0: Proton Manager, and a Compatibility tab for Windows programs

latest release: v1.38.0

New

  • Proton Manager. Download and set up GE-Proton, the build of Valve's Proton made to run games and Windows programs outside Steam, from a Windows 2000 property sheet. Versions lists what is installed and the default, with Remove, Open C: Drive and Wine Settings. Download lists GE-Proton's releases and installs one with a progress bar; every download is checked against its published checksum, and Stop cleans up after itself. Programs lists the programs with settings of their own. Options sets the default and the switches every program runs with: DXVK, esync, fsync, NVIDIA DLSS, a frame-rate counter, and the Steam Runtime through umu-launcher. Open it from Control Panel, Programs > Accessories > System Tools, or Run > proton.
  • A Compatibility tab in the Properties of Windows programs, as on Windows XP. Choose the version of Proton (or Wine) that runs a program, run it in compatibility mode for Windows 95 through Windows 11, and use OpenGL instead of Vulkan, turn off esync and fsync, or show the frame rate for that program alone.
  • Double-clicking a Windows program follows those settings. The first time a version of Proton runs a program, a small window shows while it sets up. A program installed with one version keeps running with that version's files. The first version of Proton you install becomes the default; until then programs run with Wine, as before.

DirectX 10-12 games under Proton need the Vulkan driver for your graphics card (on Debian, mesa-vulkan-drivers for AMD and Intel).

Fixed

  • A window minimised and restored while it was the only one open came back hidden under the desktop (since 1.36.0).

  • Message boxes no longer cut off the end of a long first paragraph.

  • Programs running under Proton each show their own icon on the taskbar.
