Real desktop scaling, as an experiment. Display Properties > Settings has a new box, Experimental: scale the desktop itself, not the screen. Tick it, pick a scale for your primary monitor, Apply, and log off and on: the panel stays at its native resolution and the desktop draws itself larger — title bars, frames, the taskbar, the Start menu and panel, menus, balloons, every dialog and program, and the mouse pointer — the way Windows, macOS and GNOME do it. Fonts are opened at the scaled size, icons and the XP/7 chrome are enlarged from their artwork (exact at 200%), and programs go on laying out in Windows pixels while the toolkit multiplies on the way to the screen. GTK and Qt programs started from the desktop are told the scale too.
Screen scaling is back to sensible filters. The nearest filter stays only at 200%, where it is an exact pixel doubling; 125, 150 and 175% use bilinear again, which looks better than the uneven pixels of 1.10.4.
A battery in the notification area. On laptops the taskbar shows a battery beside the speaker: filled to the charge, red when nearly empty, a bolt when on the mains; hover for what is left, click for Power Options.
Power Options in Control Panel (laptops): the Power Meter page, and a Brightness page that drives the backlight — written directly when your user may, through brightnessctl or an administrator prompt otherwise.
