Updates now install themselves

0.10.3 could tell you a new version existed. It then sent you to this page to download it by hand, which is most of the work.

InterTune now does the rest. When it finds a new version it shows you what changed and offers three choices: install it, be asked again in an hour, or skip that version. Install downloads the APK and hands it to Android, and Android asks you to confirm, because approving an install is the one thing an app is never allowed to do for you. The first time, it will also send you to the Android screen that lets InterTune ask at all. That is a one time trip.

There is a second switch, Download updates automatically, off unless you turn it on. With it on the APK is already downloaded by the time you are asked, so Install is instant instead of waiting on ten megabytes. It still asks. It cannot not ask.

The check now runs every time you open the app. In 0.10.3 it only ran every six hours, so if you opened the app and nothing happened, nothing was wrong, it simply was not due yet. That was not obvious, and it made the feature look broken.

Play starts on the first tap

Coming back to the app after leaving it a while, the play button turned into a replay button, and it took two or three taps to get a sound out of it. The first tap was what created the replay button.

The queue was reporting that it was at the end of itself before it had finished loading, so the first tap was read as "you have reached the end, start over" instead of "play". It now waits until the queue knows what is in it.

The same visit also showed "Scanning local files" for people who have local file scanning switched off. It no longer says that.

Liked songs can download themselves

New in Settings → Downloads. Turn it on and every song you have liked downloads for offline listening, and anything you like from then on downloads as you like it. There is a Wi-Fi only option if you would rather it waited.

The button shows progress while it works, and tapping it again stops it. Stopping keeps what has already downloaded.

When YouTube refuses

YouTube rate limits by connection, not by account. If yours is busy, or shared, you can be told to prove you are not a bot. Nothing about your app or your account is wrong, and there is nothing InterTune can do to be let through.

What it can do is behave. It used to answer a refusal with a stack trace and keep asking, and asking is the one thing that keeps you blocked. It now waits longer between attempts and says what is happening in plain words. Usually it clears on its own. Switching to mobile data is the quick way to check it is the connection.

Error messages elsewhere got a proper Copy button too, instead of the long press nobody knew about.

Everything is translated again

51 strings added since this fork began were still English in all 29 languages: the whole Updates section, the loudness repair, liquid glass, the sleep timer fade, swipe to dismiss, and all of the liked songs downloading. Using InterTune in French or Japanese meant running into English every few rows.

They are all translated now, each language against its own existing wording rather than in isolation, so downloads and queue and liked songs are called what they were already called.

If something reads wrong in your language, please open an issue. These were not done by native speakers and corrections are welcome. It does not need to be formal, just say what it says and what it should say.

Smaller things

  • The "Group player buttons" setting looked like it had gone missing. It only does anything with liquid glass switched on, so it was being hidden. It is now shown greyed out with a line saying why.
  • The first setup page was running off the bottom of the screen on tablets in landscape, so Restore backup and Skip sat right on the edge and read as cut off. The spacing was rebalanced.
  • The app icon is now InterTune's own rather than a tinted copy of OuterTune's.

Install the APK below. If you already have InterTune, this installs over the top and keeps your library.

If you are on 0.10.3 with update checking on, the app will tell you about this release itself and send you here. From this version onward it can fetch and install it for you instead.
