The slideshow says when it has no photos. It used to keep asking Home Assistant for a picture every thirty seconds for ever, so a folder that was renamed, moved or unshared just looked like a slideshow that had stopped. Three looks in a row that find nothing and the device waits fifteen minutes between tries and puts the reason on the screen: "photos: folder unreadable" or "photos: folder is empty", in the footer under the clock. It clears itself the moment the folder comes back.
The Display settings card says "Custom colors", not "colours".
An Echo Show 5 1st gen (2019, checkers) installs with the same one command as the 2nd gen. tools/install-show.py now sees which generation it is talking to and takes that unit's boot image out of the release, so --boot is only for a boot image you built yourself. The README and the getting started guide cover both generations, with the unlock and LineageOS links for each.
