What's New
New features for the Global Search in the TopBar
-
You can now use up to 2 wildcard
*characters to fine-tune your searches. A search with a wildcard matches the whole name instead of any part of it, and capital and small letters are treated the same. For example,HardenSystem*.exeandHa*ystem*ity.exeboth findHardenSystemSecurity.exe. Another example:*.pdffinds every name that ends with.pdf, andreport*finds every name that starts withreport. A search without a wildcard keeps finding every name that contains the text. This capability lets you find the file you are looking for even if you only remember some parts of its name. -
Drives will maintain their index database now even if the drive letters are changed, useful for fixed drives and especially useful for removable drives or external disks that you plug to the system (such as USB flash drives, external HDDs and so on).
-
You can now configure the Global Search to automatically index the drives you plug into your system, such as an external SSD. Its index on disk will remain up to 10 days so that if you unplug and plug it again, it won't have to be indexed from the beginning again and only needs to be updated, which usually takes ~1 second.
-
Added an option to the Global Search in TopBar so you can use it to instantly see the size of the on-disk database.
-
You can now clear the on-disk database of the Global Search from stale indexes, which are basically any drive that was once connected to the system, while the service was running and you explicitly enabled the auto-indexing. So essentially, you can use this button to clear the stale indexes instead of waiting 10 days for service to clean it up for you.
-
Added a new button to the Global Search in the TopBar so you can use it to manually start indexing any drive that hasn't been indexed yet, such as an external SSD that is BitLocker encrypted and you just unlocked it, or if you want to force reindexing because you didn't enable the auto-indexing of new drives.
-
The Global Search now can index drives that have no drive letter and are invisible in the regular File Explorer.
-
The
.lnkfiles now display their thumbnails in the search results. -
The Global Search service's idle timeout has been changed from 2 hours to 6 hours.
-
Updated dependencies to the latest version (including security updates from the .NET SDK).
