github Hiro-Chiba/fileview v3.1.2

FileView 3.1.2 fixes settings and keys that did not work, and removes features that were documented but never worked, so FileView stays a small, fast viewer. Config and theme files written for older versions still load.

Fixed

  • Configuration is read from ~/.config/fileview on every platform, as documented, or from $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fileview when that is set. macOS and Windows used to read only Application Support or AppData, so config, theme, and plugin files placed in ~/.config/fileview were ignored. Each file is still read from the old location when the same file is not in ~/.config/fileview, so existing setups keep working. fv plugin init now writes the template where plugins are loaded from.
  • Ctrl+J, Ctrl+K, and Ctrl+P in the fuzzy finder move the selection and close it again instead of typing j, k, or p into the query. Other Ctrl and Alt keys are no longer typed into text prompts either, while AltGr characters on Windows still are.
  • \ opens the TODO list again. It was taken as the start of a dropped path.
  • The MCP server no longer replies to JSON-RPC notifications such as notifications/initialized, which the protocol forbids.
  • enable_icons and mouse_enabled in config.toml take effect. They were read but never applied. Both stay on by default, and --icons, --no-icons, and FILEVIEW_ICONS still win over the file.

Removed

These were documented but never worked, so removing them changes no behavior. Config and theme files that still set them load as before, and the keys are ignored.

  • [hooks] in config.toml. The hooks were parsed but never run.
  • hex_max_bytes, max_archive_entries, and the [ui] section (show_size, show_permissions, date_format) in config.toml. Nothing read them.
  • background, foreground, status_bg, status_fg, and error, and the file type colors other than directory, in theme.toml. Nothing drew them.
  • keymap.toml. The file was never loaded, so custom key bindings never applied.
  • [commands] in config.toml. Commands could only be bound through keymap.toml, so none of them ever ran.
  • image_protocol in config.toml. It was never applied. FILEVIEW_IMAGE_PROTOCOL still selects the image protocol.
  • The Alt+S subshell binding. It only showed a message and never started a shell. Alt+S now does nothing instead of staging the file.

Changed

  • Every guide, the examples, and the CLI and in-app help were checked against the code and corrected. The three example plugins relied on commands that never ran, so they are replaced by one that uses events.
  • With the unused code gone, a local release build is about 50 KB smaller (6.81 MB instead of 6.86 MB on macOS ARM64), and the crate is about 9 KB smaller.
