Version 0.9.9a of the Android port of ZeldaWWHDRecomp: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Wii U, USA, Europe and Japan) as a native Android app.
What's new in 0.9.9a
Updating from 0.9.9 takes seconds: no new preparation of the game code, and save states keep working. Everything that came in 0.9.9 (the randomizer, mini map, full map, achievements and more) is in the 0.9.9 release notes.
- Your controller's letters (issue #67): Controls › Controller › Set up controller now asks which button is printed A, B, X and Y and where each one sits (bottom, right, top or left). Brands put the letters in different places, and some controllers let you swap them, so the app asks rather than guesses. The item buttons on the game screen and the + menu's item slots then show your controller's letters, and the game's A, B, X and Y on the TV are drawn in your controller's arrangement. If your X button is left of Y, the + menu's X and Y slots swap places too. Controllers you set up before can run the setup again to add their letters.
- Invert camera up/down (issue #68): a fourth choice, Normal camera only. The game itself already looks down on "up" in first person and while aiming, so this flips only the normal camera, which gives "up looks down" in every view. Conducting the Wind Waker (and the wind direction after the Wind's Requiem) is never flipped, whatever you choose.
- Put away by itself (issue #66): Controls › Touch › Put away by itself (under Item buttons, needs the context buttons). On, the sword and any other item in Link's hand (Skull Hammer, boomerang, ...) go away 5 seconds after their last use once he stands still, the Deku Leaf after 3. Off, everything stays in his hand and A shows Put away, as in the original game. It is on with Item buttons: Tap and off with Hold, until you change it.
- Pinch to zoom (issue #71): Controls › Touch › Pinch to zoom. Off, two fingers on the picture never change the view and don't interrupt the stick or a camera swipe; switching it off also puts the view back to the original. Graphics › Screens › Field of view works as before.
- Saves with a sync tool (issue #70): the save folders are now made group-writable (
drwxrws---) and the save filesrw-rw-r--, so a tool like Syncthing can sync them. Folders from earlier versions are fixed at the first start. A save file another app put there no longer stops the game from saving: the app swaps it for its own copy with the same content first. The game log lists such files and whether the app can read and write them.
Known issues
- Devices with 4 GB of RAM could still be closed by Android (issues #51, #52). Please report it if it still happens, and close other apps before playing.
- Huawei Maleoon GPUs: the game closed at the start inside the GPU driver's shader compiler (issue #53). 0.9.9 leaves out a shader that crashed the driver at the next start; please report whether it gets further.
- Snapdragon 870 / Adreno 650 with Qualcomm's driver: the GPU can hang at the title screen (issue #29). A Turnip driver (Graphics › Advanced › GPU driver) runs it.
- 60 fps (generated) needs GPU time to spare: on a Mali-G52 the game drops below 30 fps with it.
- Singing the songs is experimental: it depends on the microphone and the room.
Install
- Requirements: Android 11 or newer, 64-bit ARM, Vulkan 1.1, about 2 GB of free storage.
- Download
tloz_tww_hd_recomp-0.9.9a.apkand install it. It updates 0.9.9 in seconds; it also updates 0.9.8, 0.9.7, 0.9.6 or 0.9.5 in place, and then the game code is prepared once more. Your saves and settings are kept. Save states from 0.9.5 can't be loaded with 0.9.6 or newer; save in the game before updating from 0.9.5. - New install: put your disc image and both keys, or your
.wuafile, in one folder. Start the app, choose Extract from your disc image or .wua… and select that folder (or the files themselves).
Frame generation with Lossless Scaling needs the usual Lossless.dll from your own copy of Lossless Scaling. Buy it, don't pirate it like Gonzo would.
Everything else is in the README and the controls guide.
