Interface

  • Content comes first
In the vein of modern user interfaces, clarity of content is prioritized over all else. The main page sits above the sidebars as a bright, elevated card.
  • Kinetic design
Key areas of the interface react on hover or touch, giving the impression of tactility without relying on older skeuomorphic techniques.
  • Silent UI
Areas of the interface which are less important have de-emphasized interactions, following the design principles of MacOS. This frees up cognitive load and helps you focus.
  • Floating action button
The button for switching between writing modes has been replaced with a tactile, responsive and elegant FAB, which lights up in accent color when in editing mode.
  • Modern modals
All modals, prompts and confirmation views have been thoroughly redesigned in order to look more at home with the interfaces of 2025. Content grouping, soft border edges and consistent styling makes parsing settings a pleasant experience.

Markdown

  • Vibrant colors
Callouts and tag pills have a subtle gradient and glassy feel that is stylish yet unobtrusive.
  • Layered design logic
Blockquotes and large code blocks are subtly 'elevated' above the main page to better distinguish them.
  • Innovative highlights
Highlighted text has de-emphasized backgrounds but vibrant and bold typography, allowing highlights to be clear and modern without being harsh on the eyes.

Typography

  • Context-aware letter-spacing
Body text is made tighter in Reading mode to allow for easier parsing of long text, and is loosened in Editing mode to make typing easier.
  • Optimal contrast
Body text is WCAG compliant while also not too harsh on the eyes. Thick font weights ensure readability on all screens and reduce artifacts caused by excess sharpness.
  • Perfectly-aligned headings
Special care has been made to counteract the 'heading drift' of larger headings that is present in core Obsidian. The result is a perfect left-edge for body text.

Extra features

  • Sidebar Auto-hide
Sidebars are elegantly hidden away when the window is small enough. This frees up space and prevents the main content from being squeezed and unreadable. Subtle indicators let you know when Auto-hide is active.
  • Adaptive file margins
Unlike most other themes, Velocity's x-margins respond dynamically to the width of the main panel, increasing and decreasing in size as needed. This means the main content never has too much or too little padding.
