CleanYourTV 3.1: Samsung, LG and Roku owners get a fix too

Until now CleanYourTV could only help if your TV ran Android. If you had a Samsung, an LG or a Roku, all we could tell you was that it would not work. v3.1 gives those TVs a path too: cleanyour.tv/not-android walks you through turning off the tracking with your remote, and the repo now sends you there as soon as it's clear your TV isn't Android. The rest of this release is two days of the community at work: 41 more TVs, six new add-ons, a launcher that fits more TVs and safer tools.

Since v3.0.0: 341 TV models (from 300), 93 brands (from 86), 29 languages (from 28), 140 projects in the showcase (from 113), 323 pull requests from 176 people in two days (v3.0 had 301 from 169 in a week). No binaries, as always: build the launcher with launcher/build-and-install.sh.

Highlights

  • Samsung, LG and Roku owners get a fix too: cleanyour.tv/not-android turns off the tracking step by step with the remote, and the README, prompt, agent guide and issue page point there
  • 41 more TVs from 7 new brands: BGH, DYON, Home+, OPPO, PPTV, Seleco and Síragon
  • TV Inspector, a new add-on that shows what every remote button sends and what the TV can play. No permissions, about 18 KB
  • Six new add-ons (26 now): TV Inspector, Bluetooth Connect, Bluetooth Toggle, News screensaver, Digital Rain and Jewish Calendar
  • A Home that fits your TV: Inputs folds away empty ports, icon tiles for badly cropped banners, Restart… in the Settings menu, a Settings button that works on more TVs, Home at every power-on and the launcher's own language
  • Swedish in the launcher, add-ons in French, and the README in Dutch and Traditional Chinese
  • Safer tools: safety overrides say when they're on, the disable checks no longer pass silently, and a cleanup now warns when the TV changed address halfway
  • 140 projects in the showcase, including a Samsung Tizen home screen and a webOS edition

For Samsung, LG and Roku owners

CleanYourTV needs ADB, which only Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV have. For everything else there is now a guide.

  • cleanyour.tv/not-android: Samsung, LG, Roku, Vizio and Hisense VIDAA, step by step with your remote. No root, nothing to install, and every step can be undone
  • The README and its translations link it right at the top and in the Supported TVs table
  • PROMPT.md and AGENTS.md: an assistant that finds Tizen, webOS, Roku OS, VIDAA or SmartCast stops and sends you to the guide instead of trying
  • tools/tv.py names the guide when a TV refuses the ADB connection
  • The new-issue page has a "Samsung, LG, Roku or another non-Android TV?" link, and phone-app bugs now go straight to the app's own repo, udhaykumarbala/cleanyourtv-app

New TVs and brands

41 more TV models, from 7 new brands: BGH, DYON, Home+ (the STB-6252C cable box from Taiwan), OPPO (K9 55, ColorOS TV), PPTV, Seleco and Síragon. Also new: the first Android 14 list for Philips' PH1M board (55OLED820, Google TV 14), the BenQ E55-760, the Redmi TV 43" MOOQ3, the Toshiba 65UA2363DG, the NVIDIA SHIELD TV 2017, the XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser, two Panasonic 4KTV sets, a Sony KDL-55W800C on Android TV 7, a Hisense Fire TV, a TCL picture-frame TV and nine more TCLs, the 65QM8L among them. Plus second, third and even sixth units for many lists already here, and new device notes for a YunOS Haier, a Xiaomi MiTV-MOSR1, a Toshiba 32V35MP and the Sony VH22's Settings key. The full list: examples/.

Launcher 3.1

All new options are off by default; nothing changes unless a theme or config turns it on.

  • Inputs without the empty ports: only connected HDMI ports and devices show, the rest fold behind "More inputs" (inputs_connected_only, #1964)
  • Icon tiles for apps whose banner crops badly (icon_tiles, #1994), and icon-only tiles keep the icon centred and clear of the label (#1756)
  • Restart… in the Settings button's menu, through the TV's own power menu, so the TV still asks first (#1772)
  • Home at every power-on, whatever the TV put in front: the last HDMI input, Live TV or an app (power_on_home_always, #1625)
  • The launcher's own language, for firmware with no menu entry for it (locale, #1743), including tags such as ar-EG-u-nu-latn for Arabic with Western digits (#1986)
  • A held Home press opens Home too, for slow remotes (home_long_press_home, #1644)
  • VPN as its own pill next to the network pill, green or red (vpn_pill, #1555)
  • Remote buttons that do more: the Live TV button opens the channel guide once Live TV is showing (front: and guide:, #1855), vendor keycodes such as TCL's Netflix button work in app_keys (#1785), a hold: button fires while it is still held and each press opens its app once (#1287), and top-bar buttons follow launch_actions (#1728)
  • Lunar date in Korean, on the Korean calendar (#1887)

Fixes

  • The Settings button works on more TVs: where the firmware hides the standard settings entry, as on HY300-class projectors, it opens Android's own TV settings instead of "Not available on this TV" (#2101)
  • The Inputs menu opens on Android 9 after its extra pause (#1716), and Xiaomi MiTV-MTEQ0 HDMI inputs open the right port (#1655)
  • The clock screensaver crops its wallpaper like Home (#1616) and shows the picture Home is showing (#1832); a one-minute wallpaper rotation no longer changes every two minutes (#1900)
  • Menus and dialogs are fully opaque, so text behind them doesn't show through (#1888), and the dock glow comes back after a double Home press (#1988)
  • Hebrew mirrors the settings and module panels (#1815); the lunar date has no "day 0" just after midnight (#1846)
  • The race-weekend panel hides when the calendar runs out (#1665)

Add-ons (six new, in addons/)

  • TV Inspector: press any remote button to see its key name, key code, scan code and the device it came from, and see what the TV can play: display modes, HDR, video decoders, audio outputs and formats. Every line also goes to logcat, ready for a tv.json or a bug report. No permissions, no network, about 18 KB (#2123)
  • Bluetooth Connect: paired speakers and headphones with a Connect / Disconnect button, which the TV's own settings lack (#1824)
  • Bluetooth Toggle: Bluetooth off or on in one press, for Android 12 and older (#2020)
  • News screensaver: headlines from your own RSS and Atom feeds, with a QR code to each article (#1733)
  • Digital Rain: a Matrix-style screensaver, drawn on the TV with no network (#1763)
  • Jewish Calendar: offline Hebrew and Gregorian dates, holiday and Shabbat greetings, and an optional clock screensaver (#1806)

Sources, Weather and Headphones now speak French, and the Sources card, now labelled Devices, no longer disappears on French TVs, where the launcher keeps the name "Sources" for its own Inputs pill (#1490). World Clock now works as the TV's own screensaver (#1776), Frigate Glance counts down when objects leave and names a recognised person (#1892), Brightness and Sleep Timer get a quick bar for a remote button (#1290, #1291), and Startup & Branding keeps your picture when an import fails (#1691). Browse them all: cleanyour.tv/addons.

Themes

  • New theme: nature-calm, twelve calm nature photos from Wikimedia Commons, a new one every five minutes with its place and photographer (#1668). Ten themes now
  • theme.sh and theme.ps1 check every wallpaper name (#1788) and refuse a config.json the launcher would drop (#1945) before anything on the TV changes; theme.sh reads Git Bash paths (#1796)
  • manage.py set refuses a theme folder inside the checkout (#1876), reads configs saved with a UTF-8 BOM (#2068) and answers a missing argument with its usage line instead of a traceback (#2124)

Tools and safety

  • Overrides say when they're on: FORCE_SETUPWRAITH, FORCE_HOME, TVINPUT_ALLOW and HANDLERS_ALLOW are named whenever one is set (#1890), and on Windows they last one run, not the whole PowerShell window (#1903)
  • No silent passes: three safety checks in disable.sh no longer pass without checking (#1902), and both disable tools say which listed packages the TV left enabled (#1570)
  • A fuller undo: restore.sh turns back on what check.py --fix or a second disable run turned off (#1813), and says how to make the venv when it's missing (#1814)
  • A new address mid-cleanup is caught: when the TV gets a new address halfway (say after the Wi-Fi re-join), recovery.py warns that undo from the new address would leave the earlier batches off, and names the earlier record (#2141)
  • Windows: PowerShell tools stop on a failed ADB call instead of carrying on, and a failed Home handover rolls back (#566)
  • Encrypted ADB: TVs that only offer encrypted Wireless debugging can use an already paired adb connection (#1898)
  • Honest answers: adb-closed.py says "closed" only when the TV refuses (#1837), macOS Local Network privacy is named as such instead of "unreachable" (#1982), and the key helpers are checked after a theme restart (#1237)
  • Keys and files: tv.py writes its ADB key with private permissions (#1701) and can use the stock ~/.android/adbkey (#1787); b64push.py copies the verified file when the TV refuses the move (#1741)
  • Many tools now refuse bad input or an output they can't write before they touch the TV, tv.py --screenshot among them (#2100, #2011, #2025, #2039, #2069, #2076 and more)
  • Safer lists: TCL 55S470G keeps the service the remote's mic needs (#1738), Sony VU3 keeps what its app buttons need (#1757), and Kalley R10G keeps two packages that boot-looped a second set (#1807)
  • New in the prompt: wait before the reboot after the last batch (#1904)

Translations

  • Swedish in the launcher (#2031), so 29 languages; Spanish complete (#1769), Danish settings (#1968), an Italian late-morning greeting (#1817) and French for the cinematic shelf's "Last opened" line (#2136)
  • Add-ons in more languages: Sources, Weather and Headphones in French (#1490), Italian across twelve add-ons, Weather in Korean (#1847) and Turkish (#1652), Sleep Timer in Traditional Chinese (#1291)
  • The README now comes in Dutch (#2019) and Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) (#2084) too

Showcase

140 projects (from 113). New since v3.0 include Skylight, a home screen for Samsung Tizen TVs (#2009), the CleanYourTV webOS edition for LG (#2046), the launcher for Android 7 sets (#1921), a fast Home for Fire OS 6 (#1997), PeachOS (#1934), Casa (#1884), ZenTV (#1925), KinoDock (#1897), QuickVol TV (#1899), HabeshaTV, a mesob-ring home screen in Amharic (#2116), and ambient-tv, a Game of Life home screen (#2049). See them all in SHOWCASE.md.

For contributors

  • The launcher is about 532 KB (from 518), still under the 576 KB gate
  • CI workflows are pinned to commit SHAs (#1955), the tests report real results on Windows (#1713), and CI runs them with the tools venv (#1901)
