CleanYourTV 3.0: built by 169 people in one week

A week ago CleanYourTV was a weekend project: one TV, one prompt, one small launcher. Since then the community has turned it into a real platform. People have sent lists for their own TVs, written add-ons, translated the launcher and built whole home screens of their own on top of it. This is the first major version since the project went viral, and almost all of it was written by people who found it that week.

Since v2.7.0: 300 TV models (from 248), 86 brands (from 72), 28 languages (from 25), 113 projects in the showcase (from 71), 301 pull requests from 169 people (v2.7 had 230 from 122). No binaries, as always: build the launcher with launcher/build-and-install.sh.

Highlights

  • 20 add-ons (from 11): Smart Home, Ad Blocking, Sources, World Clock and more, each its own small app
  • Launcher 3.0: one sideways row of apps, a lunar date, uniform tiles, Home at power-on and many more opt-in switches
  • Three new languages: Danish, Korean and European Portuguese, with fuller Czech, Hebrew, Finnish, Italian, Portuguese and Chinese, and an Italian README
  • Safer lists: the remote's mic keeps working on TCL G10, inputs keep working on Sankey
  • 300 TVs from 86 brands, and 113 projects built on top in the showcase
  • Adding your TV is easier: a folder and a tv.json, and the tables build themselves
  • Meet Tubo, our new mascot

New TVs and brands

52 more TV models, from 14 new brands: Acer, AQUA, ASUS, Beko, Dcolor, Master-G, Panavox, Sber, Tuvio, the Next Start Pro 4K box, and Alwtniet, HOTACK, HY320 and Magcubic projectors. Plus second, third and fourth units for many lists already here. The full list: examples/.

Add-ons (nine new, in addons/)

  • Smart Home: Home Assistant scenes, lights, climate and locks (shown, never opened)
  • Ad Blocking: your Pi-hole or AdGuard Home, with one OK to pause for five minutes
  • Sources: inputs by the names devices give themselves ("PlayStation 5", not "HDMI 2")
  • Quiet Hours: a volume cap for the night
  • Remote Access: whether network debugging is on, with a button to switch it off
  • AirPlay Status: how iPhones and Macs see this TV
  • Startup & Branding: a welcome screen of your own
  • World Clock: up to six offline clocks
  • Flock: a flocking simulation you steer with the remote

Weather now has Fahrenheit (or both units), Brightness goes darker for real, and Capacity Stats, Photo Prints and Photo screensaver have screenshots. tools/manage.py installs add-ons, themes and switches in one place. Browse them all: cleanyour.tv/addons.

Launcher 3.0

All new options are off by default; nothing changes unless a theme or config turns it on.

  • One sideways row with every app (single_row, dock_band_all, #1245) and a dock band (dock_band)
  • Lunar date under the date, Vietnamese or Chinese (lunar_date, #836)
  • Uniform icon tiles for themes that want them (#1309)
  • Remote buttons that do more: app_keys can mute, sleep, open recents and more (#1184), or open the Inputs menu (#1167)
  • Back to Home at power-on when the firmware opens Live TV (power_on_home, #1445)
  • Top bar and header: round app buttons in the top bar (top_bar_apps), hide the greeting, full-white date, date under the clock
  • Clock screensaver over Home's wallpaper or plain black (clock_wallpaper, clock_glow)
  • Quieter focus (glass_style), orange and red Wi-Fi warnings, an Open on start app picked in settings
  • App library: hide its pill, or let OK open every app (show_library_pill, library_ok_opens)
  • Volume keys for firmware that doubles them (consume_volume_keys)
  • New theme: retro, a black invisible dock with time-of-day wallpapers (nine themes now)

Fixes

  • With stock_home_redirect, the remote's YouTube and Netflix buttons open their apps again (#1449)
  • The key helper steps aside while the screen is off, so it can't swallow the power key on some TCL sets (#1387)
  • A killed key helper comes back, and a usable Home is kept when the launcher check is unclear
  • HDMI and AV inputs go to the set Live TV app first; App info only where the TV has one
  • The Settings menu offers the TV's own settings app; Philips input names are tidied
  • Less memory in the background, a fix for clipped Hebrew and CJK text, and build fixes for Windows and macOS

Translations: new Danish, Korean and European Portuguese; fuller Czech, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Finnish and Chinese (135 strings, up from 60). The README now comes in Italian too.

Safety

  • The TCL G10 list keeps the service the remote's mic button needs (#1441)
  • The Sankey list keeps Live TV, since disabling it blanks every input (#1203)
  • The disable tools keep whichever apps open the inputs and Settings on each TV
  • New notes in the prompt: ask before setting Private DNS when the router already routes DNS, keep an own launcher's theme opaque, and check the focused app when screenshots keep showing an app you already left

For contributors

  • Adding a TV is a folder plus tv.json. The README tables, brand line and counts build themselves, so list PRs no longer collide
  • The launcher APK gate is now 576 KB, with room for new languages and switches
  • Do's and don'ts: the reasons PRs most often come back, each with an example
  • Every pull request is reviewed by maintainer-bot, which runs on 0G Private Computer

Meet Tubo

Say hi to Tubo (too-bo), a retro tube TV with sunglasses and green sneakers, and the new face of CleanYourTV.
