v1.1 - Menus In VR

one month ago

Team Beef's QuakeQuest on PC VR, over OpenXR.

Download the zip, extract it anywhere, run Setup.bat once, then Quake VR.bat.

Setup needs nothing installed

No Python, no Pillow, no downloads. Setup runs on the PowerShell that ships with Windows, finds Quake on Steam or GOG, and copies the game, every expansion you own and the soundtrack out of your own install — then builds the menu artwork and the MachineGames episodes' message text from the same data.

None of that can be distributed, which is why it is made on your machine instead.

New in 1.1

  • Menus and the attract demo are drawn in the world. Opening a menu no longer drops you out of VR onto a flat panel. The demo behind the first menu keeps the world in stereo, and you own where you are looking rather than the recording turning your head.
  • Turning is smooth by default, with its own speed on Options → Controller.
  • Blood is red.
  • Recentre Height on Options → Controller. Sit or stand as you mean to play, press A, and that becomes your standing height — so a chair no longer reads as a permanent crouch.
  • Mods can be switched from inside a game. Options → Browse Mods, turn one on or off, press A. Previously that only worked from the main menu.
  • The desktop mirror shows the right eye, fills the screen, and Alt+Enter switches it between full screen and a window.
  • The attract demo can be turned with the weapon-hand stick, and freezes while a menu is over it.

Three of those deliberately differ from Team Beef's own defaults — menus in world, smooth turning, red blood. Each is one item away in the menus, and the README says which cvar restores theirs.

Fixes

The startup demo, a no-data screen that told PC owners to copy files to their phone, the eye buffer being saved as the desktop window size, a menu page that ignored the A button, and the snap-turn drift.

What you need

A copy of Quake — Steam or GOG, the 2021 re-release is the easiest source — and a headset with an OpenXR runtime. Virtual Desktop, SteamVR or Oculus. With no headset it falls back to flatscreen.

Credits

Built on Team Beef's QuakeQuest and on DarkPlaces. Quake is id Software's. None of their data is included here.
