v1.0 - Initial Release

latest release: v1.0.1
one month ago

Prey (2006) in VR, on PC. A port of lvonasek's PreyVR — the Quest build — to PCVR through OpenXR. Room-scale, motion controllers, the full campaign.

You need your own copy of Prey. No game data is distributed here, and none is downloaded.

Install

  1. Download PreyVR-PCVR-1.0.zip below and extract it anywhere.
  2. Run Setup.bat. It finds Prey in your Steam or GOG library, copies the .pk4 files it needs next to the game, and builds the VR support file from them on your machine.
  3. Run Play PreyVR.bat.

Prey needs its 1.4 patch. Steam and GOG copies already have it; a disc install needs it applied. Setup says so plainly if it is missing, rather than failing later.

Upgrading from a previous version? Extract the new one beside the old and run Update.bat — it carries your game data, savegames and settings across and never writes to the old folder.

What is in it

  • OpenXR, tested on Quest 3 over Virtual Desktop. Works with any OpenXR runtime.
  • Motion controls — lvonasek's bindings, unchanged, including the weapon wheel and two-handed aiming.
  • A desktop mirror for streaming and recording, on by default, following your monitor's refresh rate.
  • A laser sight with four styles, aimed down the barrel the shot actually leaves from.
  • Weapons built from your own copy of Prey. A flat shooter shows a viewmodel from one angle, so the faces you would never see were deleted and the player's hands were drawn onto the weapon. Both show in VR. This port removes the hands, closes the holes with generated geometry, and positions each weapon for a VR grip — all from the retail data, on your machine.
  • A flatscreen mode, Play PreyVR flatscreen.bat, which runs the game on a monitor with no VR runtime at all.

Settings live in saves/preybase/autoexec.cfg, which ships fully commented with an explanation of every option, starting with what to turn down if frames drop.

Requirements

Windows, 64-bit, an OpenXR runtime, and a copy of Prey (2006) with the 1.4 patch.

Credit

This exists because of other people's work.

Human Head Studios made Prey. id Software wrote the engine, glKarin ported Prey's game code to Android, emileb made the multithreaded d3es this actually runs on, gabrielcuvillier made d3wasm, and Team Beef made Doom3Quest.

lvonasek designed and built PreyVR, which is the port this one follows. His own contributors are credited in the README, as is Defunkt, whose laser pointer the weapon sight came from by way of Doom3Quest.

GPL v3, like every layer beneath it. The full source is this repository.
