3.9 – Out of the way
Most of this release started with issues and a pull request from @snkiz, who builds FoxMica on top of FoxOne. All of it circles one question: how do you keep buttons out of the way without hiding them so well that you can't find them anymore?
What changes when you update
- The URL bar icons (reader view, translations, add to taskbar, add-on icons) no longer slide in when you hover the URL bar. Rest on the bookmark star for a moment and they appear next to it. The permissions icon left of the address works the same way with the shield. Passing over the bar, clicking into it and typing leave them alone, so nothing slides under the pointer while you aim for the text. To get the old behaviour back, set
--uc-urlbar-icons-reveal: 0. (#59, idea by @snkiz)
Everything else below is opt-in. If you don't touch the new options, nothing else changes.
New options
--uc-urlbar-icons-reveal– the star and shield reveal described above. On by default.--uc-autohide-nav-delay– with auto-hiding nav buttons, wait a moment before hovering reveals them, so passing over the bar doesn't shift the URL.450msis a good start. Leaving and keyboard focus stay instant. (#55, #58, @snkiz)--uc-hide-disabled-nav-buttons– hide Back and Forward while there's nowhere to go, instead of dimming them. Works with and without auto-hide. (#54, #58, @snkiz)
Fixed
- In Customize mode, auto-hidden nav buttons left empty gaps in the bar, and a Reload button in the palette could not be dragged. (found by @snkiz)
- With
--uc-hide-nav-buttons: 1, the buttons were invisible in Customize mode too, so you couldn't move them out of the bar or back in. - With animations turned off in your system, the auto-hidden nav buttons still animated. Back and Forward weren't covered at all.
- The DRM icon next to the shield showed a grey square on hover instead of turning amber.
Notes
- Only
userChrome.csschanged.userContent.cssjust carries the new version number, no need to copy it again. - Every option is explained in the customisation guide.
- Tested on Firefox 157 and 158 beta with
browser.nova.enabledset totrue.
