God of War III Remastered for PC 2.4.0

Linux: the AppImage (gow3-x86_64.AppImage) attached to this release is built on Ubuntu 24.04 (glibc 2.39) by the Linux AppImage workflow and runs on SteamOS, Bazzite/Fedora, Debian 13 and Ubuntu 24.04 or newer.

Ultrawide (beta)

5120 × 1440 · 32:9

3840 × 1600 · 21:9

  • 21:9, 32:9 and 16:10 render resolutions are built in (#458; #180, #444, also #45, #168, #173, #185): choose one in Render resolution (Home or Performance) or in the in-game menu (Insert or R3+L2). Nothing to download or install.
    • 21:9: 2560 × 1080, 3440 × 1440, 3840 × 1600
    • 32:9: 5120 × 1440
    • 16:10: 1920 × 1200, 2560 × 1600
  • Hor+ field of view: the picture fills the whole screen and the world keeps its proportions, instead of a 16:9 picture that looks zoomed in. 16:10 shows more at the top and bottom. Cutscenes are pre-rendered 16:9 videos: they play in the middle with black bars on the sides.
  • All six sizes are marked (beta) until more players confirm them. Please report how yours looks (resolution, GPU, and what is cropped, stretched or missing at the edges). Details in docs/ultrawide.md.
  • Every render resolution now shows its exact size and aspect ratio, in the launcher and in the in-game menu (for example 1440p · 2560 × 1440 · 16:9).
  • Mods can carry game patches: XML files in a mod's patches/ folder apply while the mod is ticked, and a Resolution Patch - <width>x<height> entry becomes a render resolution choice (#202). The Ultrawide mod stays available for older versions.

Special thanks to @leodascripto, who built the ultrawide support: the Hor+ field of view patches, the patch support for mods and the tool that writes the patch for any size (#202). Thanks also to @devLucasEmiliano for the black bars during cutscenes, and to @didslima and @Rithik149 for testing 32:9 and 16:10.

Game

  • FPS drops while using powers are fixed (#118; also #68, #164, #182, #240). Spartan Rage, Army of Sparta, the Blade of Olympus, the Nemean Cestus and similar effects dropped the game from 120 FPS to 40–90 FPS while they lasted: the texture cache created a new image and uploaded about 8 MB for every partial read of the frame buffers. It now reuses the cached image. New option Performance → GPU data → Fast screen effects (Rage of Sparta, weapons), on by default: switch it off if a screen effect looks stretched, shifted or wrong. Found and fixed by @hmathsan (#348).

Launcher

  • Complete Brazilian Portuguese translation (#451, #458): the graphics card option, the game folder note, the controls (button names and the key names note), the game patch descriptions and the status bar are now translated.
  • Choice lists are as wide as their longest entry, so no option is cut off.
  • Linux (#336, by @weversonl): no duplicate menu entry when Gear Lever, AppImageLauncher or appimaged already integrated the AppImage (the Desktop shortcut button follows the same rule), and the God of War font now shows in the launcher.

Documentation and build

  • Steam Deck / SteamOS: if Steam starts the native Linux AppImage with Proton, the READMEs explain how to switch the shortcut to Steam Linux Runtime (#449, #439).
  • The Windows zip is now built and smoke-tested on a clean machine by GitHub Actions (#357, by @devLucasEmiliano).

Known issues

Ultrawide (beta)

These are already known and will be fixed soon:

  • The darkened background of the main menu covers only the middle 16:9 part of the screen; the sides stay lighter.
  • QTE prompts and some HUD elements keep a 16:9 layout.
  • The sides can flash black for a moment in the transition from a camera sequence back to gameplay.
  • At 32:9 objects at the very edges look stretched, as in any game with a very wide field of view.

Start and crashes

  • The game does not start or crashes right after the Santa Monica logo on some systems (#213, #379, #404, #457), including after the Steam client update of 2026-10-15 on Steam Deck (#456).
  • prepare failed: expected PS4 SELF at start (#452). Under investigation.
  • Crash when losing focus in fullscreen with Alt+Tab (#325); use Borderless.
  • Crashes in specific places: the Labyrinth after getting the Boreas Icestorm (#453), upgrading the Bow of Apollo (#316), Hephaestus' area in Hades (#400).

Loading

  • Endless loading screen after the Hades fight (#345) and when entering the Forge after the statue fight (#428), probably also #405: an area's data load never completes.

High frame rates

  • At 120 or 240 FPS, some spots block progress: Kratos cannot pass a path (#114), and button-mashing prompts may not advance (#312). Workaround: set Engine frame rate to 60 for that spot, then back.

Textures and lighting

  • On some setups textures still turn orange or break after a long session, and come back after restarting the game (#435, #416, #450, #454, #455).
  • At 480p, areas that are already bright can be blown out to white (#390). A fix for the half-resolution pass of the 480p and 720p patches is being reviewed; use 720p or higher meanwhile.
  • Corrupted sky in Olympia on an RX 6600 (#410). On some AMD GPUs the picture is drawn small in a corner (#121). Intel Iris Plus: snow and lighting blown out to white (#260).

GPUs

  • Intel HD 630 (#35): 3D renders black or blue only. Intel Iris Xe (#188, #403): crash on the first level load. Intel UHD: Device lost during submit during area loads (#334).
  • RX 580 (#287): crash with Format10_11_11.

Performance

  • Fast screen effects were tested on NVIDIA and AMD, not on Intel yet: if a power's screen effect looks wrong, switch the option off and report it. The first use of a power in a new area can still stutter for about a second.
  • The shader cache can grow past 20 GB (#177). The performance overlay adds input lag (#153).

Audio

  • Audio glitch in Hephaestus' cutscene (#264).

Validation

  • Release package (the gow3-windows.zip attached here, built by the Windows zip workflow from 7180a7b) played on an RX 6700 XT (Windows 11): the launcher shows v2.4.0, the game opens and plays; ultrawide sizes, native and 720p, the Portuguese launcher and Spartan Rage were checked in game. The AppImage passed the smoke tests on Debian 13, Arch Linux, Fedora 42, Ubuntu 24.04 and openSUSE Tumbleweed.

  • Ultrawide in game on an RX 6700 XT (Windows 11): all six sizes render gameplay correctly; 5120 × 1440 and 3840 × 1600 shown above. Choosing a size in the launcher and in the in-game menu, restarting, and going back to native were checked.

  • Built-in ultrawide patches checked against the reference eboot.bin (sha256 d85c8135...): every signature finds its site and matches the reference addresses.

  • Launcher checked in English and Brazilian Portuguese on every page, with the choice lists open: no cut-off text, no English left in Portuguese except patch names and SDL key names.

  • Python suite: 372 tests passing on Windows. C++ tests graphics-settings, pad-map, movie-bars, videodec, services, page-state, readback-queue, wait-diagnostics, aliasing, async-pipeline-cache, png-decode, signatures, perf-overlay and ui-composition passed.

  • Fast screen effects (#348): tested by @hmathsan on an RTX 5070 (Spartan Rage and Army of Sparta, with the fix switched on and off live) and by @FelipePrado0 on an AMD RX 6700 XT (Windows 11).
