Test build ultrawide-test1 on 2.3.0: Ultrawide mod, black cutscene bars (2.3.0-ultrawide-test1)

pre-release3 hours ago

Test build for the Ultrawide mod (pull request #202, issue #180). It is 2.3.0 plus PR #202: mods can carry game patches and can be dropped in as a .zip, so the mod works without the 2.2.0 installer. 2.2.0 and 2.3.0 do not read the mod's zip: with them the game stays at its usual resolution (the "it just runs at 1080p" report on #202).

What changes from 2.3.0

  • Mods with game patches. A mod can carry patch files (patches/*.xml, with signatures like the built-in ones) and can be a .zip in the mods folder, unpacked by itself. A Resolution Patch - <width>x<height> of a ticked mod is a Render resolution choice in the launcher (Home, Performance) and in the in-game menu (Insert → Performance), as 3440x1440 (mod) and so on.
  • Ultrawide.zip (attached below): 3440x1440, 2560x1080, 3840x1600 (21:9), 5120x1440 (32:9), 1920x1200 and 2560x1600 (16:10), with a wider horizontal field of view instead of a zoomed-in picture. Only 3440x1440 was tested in game by the mod's author.
  • Cutscene bars are black. The game draws a cutscene in a 16:9 picture in the middle of the screen and never clears the rest (at 16:9 there is no rest). At the mod's sizes the last game frame stayed at the sides, or at the top and bottom at 16:10: the "freezes at the last frame before the video" report on #202. While the video decoder hands out pictures, the presenter now draws everything outside that 16:9 picture black. Render sizes within 1% of 16:9 (all the built-in ones) are not touched.

Not changed: menus and the HUD are fitted to 16:9 by the game, so the darkened background of a menu does not reach the sides (the top and bottom at 16:10). Cutscenes stay 16:9: they are pre-rendered videos.

How to test

  1. Unzip gow3-windows.zip into a new folder and point the launcher at your game files.
  2. Put Ultrawide.zip (do not unzip it) in the mods folder next to God of War III.exe (launcher: Mods → Open). Open the launcher again: the Mods page lists the mod, ticked, with "(game patches)".
  3. In Render resolution pick your monitor's size (mod), then PLAY. Use borderless or fullscreen at the same size.
  4. Play until a cutscene video starts during gameplay (not only the one before New Game), and also look at the main menu and the pause menu.

Reply on #202 with: the resolution, your GPU, whether the bars around a cutscene are black, whether gameplay comes back in full after the cutscene, and anything cropped, stretched or missing at the edges. If something fails, attach user\last_run.log.

Validation so far

  • Unit tests: movie-bars-test (the bars at 5120x1440, 3440x1440 and 2560x1600; none at 1920x1080, 854x480 and 3840x2160; shown only while pictures keep coming), videodec-test (one report per picture handed to the game, none for a picture that does not fit), graphics-settings-test; Python suite: 331 tests OK.
  • The signatures of all six mod sizes match the reference build d85c8135… (the author tested on 6e72330e…).
  • Not run in game here: no ultrawide monitor. That is what this build is for.

You still need your own God of War III Remastered game files. No game files are included.
