0.3.0 — 15 September 2026

Metadata scraping

  • Added the LaunchBox Games Database as a scrape source, and made it the default first choice. It needs no account and no API key, so a fresh install can scrape a whole library before the user has set anything up.
  • Scraping now walks the sources in a configurable order and takes the first one that actually has a given field, so a source with nothing for a field is skipped rather than ending the search. SteamGridDB and IGDB stay available behind it.
  • Scraped art and text are mirrored into the user's own media folder as real files instead of living only as URLs in the app database, and are downscaled to 1024px on the way in so large grids scroll instead of stuttering.
  • Cover shape is now a real choice per scrape (Box / Portrait / Square), and cartridge and disc scans are fetched per system according to what that system physically shipped on.

New console themes

  • Real per-system UIs for NES, Mega Drive/Genesis, N64, Xbox and Xbox 360.

Sound and startup

  • Real UI sound packs for Xbox 360 and the DSi, plus the DSi's and the 3DS's own looping menu music.
  • Real boot-up videos for Xbox, Xbox 360 and 3DS.
  • New: boot videos can be turned off for every system at once (Settings → Display → Startup). Each system's own toggle and video pick are kept, so switching it back on restores exactly what you had.
  • New: per-system menu music volume, in that system's options popup (North button), for the systems that have music — GameCube, Wii, DSi and 3DS. Per-system rather than global because these are real console rips mastered at very different levels.
  • UI sound volume stays one global setting that applies to every system at once; only the on/off switch is per-system.

Second display

  • The lower screen now has its own keyboard button, so text entry works even when focusing a field doesn't raise the soft keyboard by itself.
  • 3DS detail screen background nudged to fill its frame edge to edge.

Why LaunchBox is the right scraper for this app

Not because it has the most games — because it's the only one of the three that has the things this launcher actually draws.

It is the only public source with physical media scans. KONSORU's whole premise is a mini console per system: a themed shelf where a game is a cartridge you can see, or a disc in a case. That needs a picture of the real cartridge shell or the real disc face. SteamGridDB has grids and logos; IGDB has covers and screenshots. Neither has cart or disc scans at all. Without LaunchBox, half the themes have nothing to put on the shelf.

Its coverage is on the retro library we actually target. The other two are strongest on modern PC and current-gen titles. LaunchBox's database is built by and for the retro emulation community, which is exactly the library on this device. Measured across a spread of real titles from the test library, LaunchBox had a Box - Front for 13 of 13 — which is why box art, not square art, is the default cover shape.

It is the only one with structured text metadata. Developer, publisher, genre and release date come back as real fields, not prose to be parsed. The detail screens are built around those fields.

It works with no account and no API key. SteamGridDB needs a key; IGDB needs Twitch developer credentials — a client ID and secret from a developer portal. Both are reasonable asks of someone who already wants them, and both are a wall in front of someone who just installed the app. LaunchBox is the only source that gives a first-run scrape something to work with immediately.

It has one image type vocabulary that covers every theme's needs. Box front, 3D box, square, icon, clear logo, cart, disc, gameplay and title screenshots, fanart backgrounds — all from one lookup on one game page, with region labels so the right regional variant can be picked. Each other source would need its own separate request per asset kind.

The other two aren't dropped, because they're genuinely better at specific things: SteamGridDB returns covers and logos in the exact dimensions a theme asks for, and IGDB has the best descriptions and title corrections. They sit behind LaunchBox in the default order and fill in what it doesn't have.
