Addon Manager for Lossless Scaling 0.9.21

Sharper upscalers at rest, with the shimmer kept down.

  • Steady sharpening (test), a new slider in the upscalers' panel (off by default). Sharpening amplifies the game's own shimmer as well as its detail. With this on,
the sharpening is worked out from a running average of the picture (followed along the measured motion and kept within this frame's neighbourhood, so a wrong
motion cannot ghost) and only that sharpening is added to the current frame: the detail stays, the shimmer is not amplified. nr_sreval on World of Warcraft
clips at 1:1: about 10 points less flicker for the same detail on a nearly still scene and 1 to 2 in motion, never worse than plain sharpening
(docs/frame-generation-research.md). Upscaling 1.5x it is neutral to slightly worse in motion, so it stays off by default. Tried live in HDR by the project owner: sharper at rest, no
HDR problems. Costs two more passes and one copy. Try Sharpening 0.5 to 0.7 with Steady sharpening 0.6 to 0.9.
  • A new default: Sharpness at rest 0.5 (was off). Upscaling 1.5x and scored against the game's full-size frames (three clips), it is closer to them and steadier at every
step: 1.3 dB closer and 1.4 dB steadier at 0.6 than at 0. It applies to new installs and to any setting never saved; a saved value stays.
  • The same measurements found that "Crisp edges when moving (EASU)" scores lower (about 0.15 dB on WoW, 1.75 dB on Silent Hill f) though it looks crisper, and that "Motion by
shape (test)" changes nothing measurable (under 0.03 dB); both stay off by default.
