Warning
This is a public beta release. While it has been tested and is considered stable enough for regular use, some features may still behave unexpectedly and there may be cosmetic issues.
This beta will receive updates only within the beta branch. Once the final 1.4.2 release is published, you’ll need to reflash using the final release image to switch back to the stable update channel. Your Forge-X settings, user configuration, and calibration data will be preserved when switching to the beta and back — no recalibration is needed.
Even so, I strongly recommend creating a backup with TAR_BACKUP before installing the beta and downloading that backup to your computer as well, just in case.
By installing this version, you acknowledge that it is beta software and use it at your own risk. No guarantee is made that everything will work perfectly on every printer or configuration.
Highlights
- Added built-in timelapse recording and video creation directly on the printer, without an external server. Capture by layer, time, or print progress.
- Added model previews to Feather’s file browser and printing screen, with a grid view and visual print progress. For clear previews, configure high-quality thumbnails in your slicer — see thumbnail setup.
- Bed mesh validation can now automatically adjust Z-offset to compensate for Z-homing inaccuracies, or generate a new mesh when needed. The offset correction is temporary and does not change saved calibration.
- Added selectable bed collision responses. Instead of always shutting down, the printer can now pause a print or issue a warning; emergency shutdown remains the default.
- Added a lightweight nozzle-contact check before printing. If the parked nozzle is already pressing on the bed, print preparation is canceled before further movement. Enabled by default.
- Fixed the Stock screen freezing after
SAVE_CONFIG,RESTART, andFIRMWARE_RESTART.
What’s included
- Added out-of-memory protection for Klipper, preventing it from being selected for termination when memory runs low.
- Significantly optimized the UI component model, layout calculation, text measurement, and rendering.
- Improved overall Feather responsiveness, navigation, and transitions into the printing screen.
- Reworked the dialog system and its rendering, with better sizing, text pagination, button wrapping, and handling of overlapping messages. Cold Pull now uses the shared status dialogs.
- Added a dedicated UI component benchmark (tap the main-menu title five times).
- Optimized joystick mode and fixed MCU shutdowns caused by joystick movement.
- Faster printing-screen updates with fewer redraws and more stable status and control layouts.
- Background file scanning, preview loading, USB handling, and print-history saving to keep the interface responsive.
- Updated bundled fonts and font sizes, and removed unused large fonts to reduce display binary size.
- A theme picker that previews how the selected theme will look before applying it.
- A redesigned bed-screw calibration screen with a bed diagram and clearer adjustment directions.
- Feather displays supported calibration and recovery workflows started from Fluidd, Mainsail, or the console.
- Model previews in the file browser and printing screen, with list/grid selection, caching, and visual progress when layer information is available. Use
512x512/PNGthumbnails and re-slice your models as described in the Slicing guide; low-resolution thumbnails produce lower-quality previews. - Fixed clipped Live Z labels, pause/resume button states, and error-screen behavior during MCU shutdowns.
- Fixed Feather ECO mode not restoring the configured idle brightness after printing.
- Temperature controls now start from the nearest value to the current bed or nozzle temperature.
- Support for OrcaSlicer’s packaged
.gcode.3mfuploads. - Parallel bed and nozzle heating during print preparation, with the nozzle initially held at the cooldown temperature to reduce oozing.
- Added WildBill’s adaptive two-pass nozzle priming and wiping option.
- Fixed resume after a long pause or idle timeout, restoring bed and nozzle temperatures and re-homing when needed.
- Resume checks for filament before reheating and tolerates small temperature fluctuations.
- Selectable bed-collision responses: emergency shutdown, print pause, or warning, with emergency fallback when a normal pause is unavailable.
- A lightweight nozzle-contact check before printing, enabled by default.
- Five-point bed mesh validation with automatic recalibration or temporary Z-offset correction for uniform Z-homing errors.
- Improved generated-mesh saving prompts and preservation of the previous
automesh asauto_prev. - Fixed relative
MOVE_SAFEdirection handling and added a smart-homing safeguard against staleG92coordinate shifts. - Backported Klipper multi-MCU synchronization improvements, expected to reduce communication errors during homing.
- Backported reactor fixes and improved garbage collection, configuration-status handling, and temperature waits.
- Improved probe cleanup after errors and cancellation.
- Fixed a bug where repeated Cold Pull calls could fail to extrude filament.
- Completed prints now park at X110/Y110.
- Built-in timelapse capture by layer, time, or print progress, with optional toolhead parking and a final photo.
- Per-print timelapse control and a guided wait while the previous video is being created.
- Improved pause, resume, filament-runout, and cancellation handling during timelapse photos.
- Automatic camera enabling when a working camera is detected on the first Feather, Guppy, or Headless boot, unless explicitly disabled.
- Improved camera format compatibility and streamer reliability, with a
NO SIGNALimage when valid frames are unavailable. - Fixed duplicate chamber-light configuration left by the Stock firmware.
- Advanced Recovery can now find and clean up large directories.
- Firmware SHA-256 verification before recovery flashing, with clearer certificate errors when the printer’s clock is incorrect.
- More reliable configuration initialization, atomic setting saves, and recovery from invalid individual settings.
- Fixed Stock fallback after failed initialization and adoption of existing Ethernet services.
- Standard
SAVE_CONFIG,RESTART, andFIRMWARE_RESTARTnow keep the Stock screen connected; the oldNEW_*workarounds are deprecated. - With
close_dialogs=FAST, the Stock screen’s finished-print dialog is now closed before starting the next print (previously, the 20-second delay could block starting another print immediately). - Support for persistent user Klipper plugin packages and patch overrides, including conflict checks and backups.
- Web-update archives are validated before replacing the installed interface.
- More complete cleanup of obsolete modules during updates and uninstall, and correct framebuffer restoration when leaving the alternative display.
- Expanded automated and visual regression coverage, improved reports, and GitHub Actions checks.
- Minor cosmetic changes and reworked documentation.
- Many smaller fixes and improvements.
