PecoFence 0.2.2 shows shortcut arrows and folder contents like the Windows desktop, keeps whole tab names, keeps up with crowded desktops, and brings dark menus, two new rule options and a long list of fixes.
Highlights
- Icons look like on the Windows desktop. Shortcuts show Windows' shortcut arrow, the one you set in Windows included, so a shortcut and the file it opens can be told apart (requested in the in-app feedback). Folders show what is inside them: a folder of pictures shows one of them, a folder of documents shows a page (#120, requested by @jtyking). Turn the arrows off with Settings → General → Appearance → Show shortcut arrows; folder previews follow File Explorer's Always show icons, never thumbnails.
- Whole tab names (#82, requested by @xan2622). Tabs that do not fit the title row keep their width, and the strip scrolls instead: the tab you switch to slides into view, and an end with more tabs behind it fades out. Dragging a tab or a fence to an end of the strip scrolls it that way.
- Faster with many desktop files. 500 files created at once show in about half the time, at a fifth of the CPU time; a start with 1,000 desktop files no longer freezes the fade-in; and the first fence shows sooner while Windows is still busy signing in.
- Dark menus. When Color mode comes out dark, the fence menu, an icon's menu, their submenus and the tray menu are dark too (Windows 10 version 1903 and later).
- Rules that leave things alone (#71, #69, #70, requested by @wuxiemian). The new Plain files condition takes every file the rules above it left, and never programs or shortcuts. Settings → Sorting rules → Items that match no rule → Stay in their current fence keeps icons no rule matches where they are when the rules are applied.
- Hide the Desktop fence while Windows desktop icons show (requested in the in-app feedback, on linux.do and on appinn). With Hide Windows desktop icons off, turn on Hide the Desktop fence while Windows desktop icons are shown: the fences show only what the rules or you put in them, and everything else stays on the Windows desktop.
- White icon names (#64, requested by @ZGMFX01A). Settings → General → Appearance → Icon label color keeps the names white (or black) in Liquid Glass and Fluent, whatever the wallpaper.
- QuickLook with Space. While QuickLook runs, Space previews the selected icon, the arrow keys move the preview along, and Esc closes it.
- Smaller options. Offer “Create a fence here” after dragging a rectangle on the desktop can be turned off; Hide the item count and the roll-up arrow in the title bar leaves the name alone in the title; a folder merged into a tab strip shows its folder icon (#86, contributed by @xan2622);
.tsvfiles count as documents.
Fixes
- Folders shown on the desktop follow their folder again after it was deleted or its drive went away and came back, say so when it is gone instead of This folder is empty., and work on network shares and mapped drives, also when the fence was made with 0.2.1.
- A
config.jsonsaved with a BOM, with one fence size out of range, with a fence listed twice, or held open by another program for a moment at startup loads instead of being set aside; tabs that name each other as their host no longer hang PecoFence at startup; a failed save puts the previous file back. - Renaming: emptying the name keeps the old one, a name Windows cannot use keeps the box open, a rename never replaces a file another program has just created, and long paths work again.
- Dragging into a folder fence works like Explorer: Ctrl copies, Alt makes a shortcut, a drag onto another drive copies. Cut and paste keeps the files on the clipboard until the move went through.
- Esc cancels moving a fence by its title in Fluent too; a fence dropped partly off the screen is pulled back; fences are no longer always on top after Win+D twice.
- Choosing the Peek shortcut again after a fallback switches back to it (#112, reported by @Mr-LaoKang), and 0.2.0 configurations with Win+Space no longer show the "shortcut in use" notice at every start.
- A rule added in Settings goes to the top of the list, where it gets the files first. Settings' own snapshots no longer push out the ones you saved.
- After a graphics driver reset the fences go back to the graphics card, and a moment of low memory no longer turns Liquid Glass off for good. With a Span wallpaper over several monitors, each fence's glass shows its own part of the picture.
.bakfiles, and.tmpfiles a minute old, show in a fence instead of sitting unseen behind the fences; Office documents saved through a temporary file stay in their fence.- Fences dropped on another fence's tabs land in the gap shown under the pointer.
