Peregrine 1.0.0-rc.4

This is an unsigned release candidate. macOS Gatekeeper and Windows SmartScreen will warn on first launch; the install steps below get past the warning without changing your machine's security settings. Every download can be checked against SHA256SUMS.

Highlights

A household, not a single profile

  • Profiles are shared between the desktop and every paired browser: names, avatars, kid profiles, and the active profile.
  • The active profile scopes watchlists, watch progress, continue-watching, history, and notifications. The library stays shared.
  • Existing device-local profile books are imported on first use.

Watch on the TV and in a browser

  • A paired LAN client with Browse, My List, a ten-foot layout, a player, live download progress, and profile switching.
  • Pairing is explicit and audited; devices are read-only by default, and acquisition is an opt-in scope per device.
  • The host keeps the computer awake while serving and warns when it is running low on battery.

Library and discovery

  • Schedule a future title or release, and refuse a watch mark before the release or air date.
  • Per-episode progress, resume, next up, season downloads, and a viewing history with daily watch-time metrics.
  • Library ordered by most recently added, automatic matching, cast pages, and local filmography.
  • Download rows now show protocol, transferred and total size, rate, ETA, peers, and the reason a transfer is blocked.

Acquisition and playback

  • Native Usenet acquisition with primary and backup providers, NZB inspection, repair and extraction, and library import.
  • Stream a download while it is still arriving; live torrents are reattached after a restart.
  • Browser player parity, external subtitles, track selection, and progress sync across the desktop and the TV client.

Backup and restore

  • One backup file holds profiles, wishlists, watch progress, history, settings, the catalogue, the library index, match rules, notifications, and scheduled downloads.
  • A restore is validated, staged, and applied on the next launch. If the restored database cannot be opened, the previous database is put back automatically.
  • Downloaded media, cached artwork, credentials, the acquisition queue, paired sessions, and logs are deliberately not in the backup.

Interface

  • Settings is grouped behind a section navigation rail.
  • Action buttons keep their full labels, show a spinner and phase progress while they work, and confirmation dialogs stay open until their action settles.
  • Better reduced-motion behaviour, async announcements, focus handling, and keyboard and touch targets.

Install

  • macOS (Apple silicon or Intel): open the DMG and drag Peregrine to Applications. First launch: Control-click the app, choose Open, then confirm. Do not disable Gatekeeper system-wide.
  • Windows x64: run the NSIS installer. SmartScreen: More info → Run anyway. Verify the SHA-256 first.
  • Linux x64: make the AppImage executable and run it, or install the deb with sudo apt install ./peregrine_*.deb.
  • Verify: download SHA256SUMS into the same folder as the archive and run shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS on macOS or sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS on Linux.

The release also includes artifacts.manifest.json (every asset with its size and digest), CHANGELOG.md, and the Rust and Node SBOMs.

What is not in this release candidate

Code signing and notarisation are not configured. There is no Apple Developer ID, no Authenticode certificate, and no minisign signature. The four platform bundles, checksums, manifest, and SBOMs are complete; the signature is an optional extra, not a condition for this release.
