Perfect Dark with jump, a combat roll, melee combos, a third person camera, up to 80 simulants, a spectator camera, Ghost Trials, screenshots and video recording.

3.0 is about textures. The game can now write its own out, read replacements back, and — if you want it to — upscale the lot for you.

Texture replacement

Drop PNGs into a pack folder and the game draws them instead of the originals. No conversion step, no tooling, no restart.

  • Dump what you see. F7 writes every texture the game draws to texturedump/, named by texture number and format, the right way up for an image editor. --dump-textures walks the whole texture table in one go instead, so you get all of them without playing through every room.
  • Edit and drop back in. The dumper's own filenames are accepted unchanged, so a dump is a starting point rather than something to rename.
  • Emulator packs work as they are. The high-resolution packs made for Project64 and friends are read directly, including straight out of a .zip or .7z — no offline conversion. Textures a model keeps to itself, which have no texture number, are matched by checksum as they are drawn.
  • A Texture Packs menu, under Extended Options: pick a pack, delete one, and see how many textures it actually replaces. F8 turns packs off and on, which is also how you reload one after editing an image.

Upscayl support, optional

A quick way to get a texture pack without drawing one: point the game at Upscayl and it will build a pack out of the game's own textures, on your machine.

  • Nothing is bundled. Upscayl and the model you pick are downloaded on demand, and it asks first and tells you how large the download is.
  • It runs on a worker while you carry on playing, with progress in the corner of the screen. Cancel stops it.
  • Tiling textures get their own edges wrapped around them before upscaling, so walls do not come back with a seam down every join.
  • The pack it makes is selected for you when it finishes.

Results may vary. This is a machine learning upscaler working on 32×32 textures with no idea what they are meant to be; some come back beautifully and some come back as smudges. It is quick and it is free to try — pick a different model or scale and build another one if you do not like the first.

Also in this release

  • Video recording is opt-in on Windows, in Dab's Mod Options, and can fetch an ffmpeg for you if you have not got one. Recording on Windows previously needed an ffmpeg you were expected to find yourself, and said nothing when there was not one.
  • Recording and upscaling no longer steal focus on Windows — no console window taking the foreground mid-game.
  • A round of fixes to Ghost Trials' leaderboard and account handling.
  • A great many smaller fixes across the new texture code, found by auditing it.

You need your own Perfect Dark ntsc-final ROM — see README.md inside the download for where it goes.
