Updated browser engine

Waterfox now uses Gecko 160.0, up from 159.0, with upstream website compatibility and stability fixes.

Waterfox changes

Optional protection for sensitive screens

On Android 12 and later, the new "Protect sensitive screens" setting hides floating windows from other apps while you view password and payment card screens or edit saved addresses.

The setting is off by default and is available in Settings under Privacy and security.

Custom search engine icons

Adding or editing a custom search engine now looks for its icon on the search provider's website. If an icon cannot be found while editing an engine whose search URL has not changed, Waterfox keeps its existing icon.

Inherited platform changes

Scrolling screenshots

Waterfox now supports Android's system scrolling-screenshot capture on Android 12 and later. Availability depends on your device's screenshot tools.

Address bar and links

  • Website addresses display readable Unicode characters more consistently, including when editing an address.
  • Explicit http:// and https:// addresses containing spaces in their path, query or fragment are handled as addresses, with the spaces encoded, instead of being treated as searches.

Widgets and PDF signing

  • Updated the home screen search widgets and their previews in Android's widget picker. Android 15 and later also receive generated widget previews.
  • Improved the positioning of PDF signing controls as the keyboard opens and closes.

Stability and notifications

  • Fixed QR scanner crashes that could occur when leaving the scanner or closing its camera.
  • Prevented crashes when a website permission prompt arrives after the browser screen has saved its state or been destroyed.
  • Requests immediate display of the private browsing notification instead of allowing Android to defer it. Notification permissions and system behaviour still apply.
  • Camera and microphone recording notifications now account for sites opened in custom tabs, including pages opened inside other apps.

Optional tab strip and Google Lens

  • When the tab strip and homepage-as-new-tab setting are enabled, closing the last tab from the strip opens the tabs tray without first creating a replacement homepage tab.
  • The optional Google Lens camera remembers whether you last selected image search or QR scanning when opened from the address bar, and the address bar icon reflects that choice.
