Security update
This release includes platform security fixes for the compromised eMudhra intermediate certificates described in the security advisory. An attacker with the affected signing keys could impersonate websites if they can intercept your connection.
It also fixes an Android startup issue that could delay applying the bundled certificate blocklist. Waterfox now loads the blocklist at startup, without waiting for a background update.
Note
The blocklist loading issue was inherited from the upstream Android codebase. We prioritised getting this fix to Waterfox users as quickly as possible - Waterfox for desktop was not affected by this startup issue.
Updated browser engine
Waterfox now uses Gecko 159.0, up from 158.0, with upstream security and website compatibility fixes.
Waterfox changes
Local crash reporting
Sentry is no longer bundled with Waterfox, and remote crash uploads are disabled. Crash records stay on your device.
We removed the settings and prompts for uploading crash reports. Previously saved reporting choices cannot enable uploads. Local crash recording and browser recovery remain available.
Inherited platform changes
Downloads, PDFs and media
- Sharing a PDF now preserves edits and annotations made in the viewer.
- Downloaded filenames have better handling of misleading or unsupported characters.
- Fixed browser audio interrupting alarms, and improved playback resuming through Android media controls, headsets and car controls.
- Improved playback of some streaming videos, including AV1 video, and fixed missing audio in some protected streams.
- Improved handling of HDR videos selected for upload through Android's photo picker on supported devices.
Sync and account connections
- The "Last synced" time now reflects a successful sync of your enabled data. Background tab only updates no longer change the overall timestamp.
- Improved sign-in recovery when a Sync pairing QR code is invalid.
- Stopped unnecessary account profile refreshes during background tab syncing.
Website and display fixes
- Fixed blank gaps and misplaced controls at the bottom of webpages when the keyboard is open and the browser toolbar moves.
- Fixed screen rotation restrictions carrying over incorrectly between fullscreen pages and tabs.
- Waterfox now retries certain failed website connections using a different connection method.
Optional Google Lens integration
Google Lens remains off by default. For users who enable it, this update fixes the search widget button disappearing or appearing in the wrong position. Image uploads now show a loading screen while the search is being prepared.
