Directory Opus 5.103 adds an Installer script, a MagicWB icon set, 104 stored filetypes, Eject Disk and a package for AROS on aarch64. Startup is about three times faster, and the release fixes a long list of Dual Lister, colour, AppIcon and 64-bit AROS problems.

Installing and upgrading

Each archive now contains an Install DOpus5 script for the Installer program.

  • A fresh install goes into a DOpus5 drawer in the place you choose. If DOpus5: already points at an installation, the script offers to upgrade it.
  • An upgrade replaces the program, Libs, Modules, C, Help, ARexx, Icons, Images, Storage and WBStartup. Your Buttons, Environment, Settings, Filetypes and other configuration drawers only receive files they don't have yet.
  • You choose how Opus starts: manually, when Workbench starts, or (AmigaOS 3 builds) instead of Workbench through LoadDB. The script maintains a ;BEGIN DOpus5 block in S:User-Startup and never edits the Startup-Sequence.
  • You choose between the standard images and the new MagicWB set (IconSets/MagicWB, 8 and 16 colour screens). MagicWB is suggested on AmigaOS 3 systems without Picasso96 or CyberGraphX.
  • On AmigaOS 3 the script can add the new LoadDOpusLib command to S:User-Startup. It loads dopus5.library before WBStartup runs, so AppIcons such as NewMeter's appear on the Opus desktop.
  • The os3 archive refuses to install on a 68000 or 68010 and points to the os3-68000 archive.

Unpacking an archive over an existing installation by hand still works, but leaves the old underscore-named files in DOpus5:Storage/Filetypes next to the new ones; you can delete them.

Highlights

  • Eject Disk in the Icons menu and the disk pop-up menu, for removable SCSI, ATAPI and USB media and trackdisk-style drivers such as DAControl (#163).
  • Faster startup: module commands are cached in DOpus5:System/module-cache, filetypes load in the background, iconify icons load when first needed, and the backdrop picture loads while the desktop icons are read (#187, #185).
  • Filetypes: DOpus5:Storage/Filetypes holds 104 filetypes, the contributions from #131 merged with the existing set and named "Category, Format". ASCII and AmigaGuide are installed by default, so double-clicking a text file or guide no longer starts the Filetype Finder.
  • STARTUPDRAWER tool type and argument: Opus can run its own startup drawer instead of SYS:WBStartup (#107).
  • XADOpenInLister: a new XADOpus command that opens an archive in the lister it was double-clicked in (#180).
  • Palette presets (Workbench Screen, Workbench 3.1, MagicWB) and a working Reset in the Environment editor (#154).
  • The Buttons menu moved under Settings (#111).

Fixes

Dual Lister

  • Commands no longer change the source panel behind your back, and both panels keep their directory buffers while they are on screen.
  • Files dropped on a panel go to that panel's directory; dragging between panels copies or moves.
  • Each panel keeps its own sort and display format.
  • Buttons, hotkeys and ARexx commands without a lister use the active panel as the source, so Set Dual Off from ARexx works.

Display and colours

  • Custom lister colours are used for every lister element, not only the free space gauge and tooltips (#144).
  • Icon labels get a closed outline, and the Text+Outline / Text+Shadow modes from OS 3.2 and OS 4 Font prefs are honoured (#126).
  • On AmigaOS 3.2, in-window scrollers use the system knob imagery (#153).
  • The lister title padlock uses the shine pen (#148).
  • The lister toolbar is sized from its buttons, not from the scroll arrow image (#168).
  • MagicWB icons get the right colours when Opus replaces Workbench (#11) and are no longer remapped while "Set MagicWB Colors" is on.
  • Colours are correct after Opus moves from an RTG screen to a native one.
  • The titlebar clock on AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS shows the time instead of a repeated character (#170).

Icons and AppIcons

  • Icon transparency masks are built on the CPU, kept in fast memory on RTG screens, and not built at all on AmigaOS 4 and AROS. Opening a 50-icon drawer on an emulated A4000/060 (JIT off) went from 1.92 s to 1.09 s.
  • Toolbar image remapping caches its pens: building the default lister toolbar took about 8 seconds on an emulated 68060 with a 32-bit screen and now takes under 2. Remapped images stay in fast memory on RTG screens.
  • AppIcons with a render hook (NewMeter) are drawn by the hook and no longer flash on every update.
  • Workbench Tools menu items added through ARexx MENU ADD work while Opus is running.
  • Opus recognises its own button bank, start menu and environment files again.

Platform fixes

  • AROS x86_64: Copy and Move to disk icons no longer crash (#145, #147); several 64-bit attribute reads no longer overwrite memory.
  • AROS: Format writes bootable bootblocks, and Show plays ANIM-5 and ANIM-7 animations correctly.
  • MorphOS: XADOpus opens archives again; module callbacks receive all their arguments (#175).
  • FTP: connecting no longer overflows the lister stack (#182).
  • XADOpus: dropping an archive on a lister extracts it and refreshes that lister instead of opening a duplicate (#174).

DOpus5.guide (58.19) covers the Installer, Eject Disk, STARTUPDRAWER, LoadDOpusLib, palette presets and the XADOpus commands. DOpusM2_ARexx.guide is at 57.8.

Build

  • OS3 builds use GCC 6.5.0b, OS4 GCC 11.5.0 and MorphOS GCC 15.2.0. The sources also build with GCC 14 and 16.
  • The OS3 build warns about stack frames larger than 4 KB.
