What's new
-
A Photoshop file opens with its layers. Until now it arrived as one flat picture. Every layer is now a layer here too, with its name, position, opacity, blend mode and clipping. Adjustment layers and layer effects cannot come along.
-
And it can be written again. Save as… offers PSD, which is how work leaves FerrumPix for Photoshop, Affinity or GIMP. Opened here again, such a file gives you back the text as text, the shapes as shapes and the corrections as corrections; other programs see an ordinary layered picture.
-
Text from a Photoshop file can come in as text. Then the wording can be typed on; taken as a picture every pixel is exactly as it was, but the words are fixed. FerrumPix asks on opening, and under Settings, Editor you can settle it once. Written out, text is pixels for everyone else.
-
Both directions are a plain first pass. Layer masks, groups, 16-bit files and anything that is not RGB stay outside for now, and a file that goes beyond what is read opens flat rather than half right. If you work with these files a lot, it is worth saying which part you miss most.
-
The brush paints on the picture layer you selected. Select an inserted picture in the layers panel and brush and eraser go into that picture instead of into the photo underneath it. The eraser takes real holes out of it, so what is behind shows through. The layer keeps moving, scaling and rotating as before, and undo steps back through it as usual. Your own file is never touched - only a saved project or an exported picture carries the result.
-
A selection holds the brush. Draw a selection and it now stays while you paint: brush and eraser only work inside it, right up to its soft edge, and the marching ants stay on screen so you can see what is holding them. Painting outside simply does nothing instead of quietly landing on the photo.
-
The AppImage tells updaters about new versions. Tools that manage AppImages now spot a new release on their own and download only what changed.
-
One button less in the layers panel. New adjustment with a copy of the mask is gone. Since layers never share a mask, it did the same as duplicating the layer, only with the sliders reset.
-
The settings say when another version is out. Opening the settings asks the project page once which version has been published; if it differs from yours, it stands next to your version and takes you to the download page in one click. Nothing is sent along, and being offline changes nothing.
-
The comparison divider comes back with a middle click. Zoomed into a corner, the divider often sat off screen and the comparison showed only one of the two states. A middle click on the Compare button in the editor puts it back into the middle of what you can see.
Fixes
-
Opening pictures in the editor now sticks. The setting for what a double-click in the gallery opens was never written down, so pictures kept opening in the viewer.
-
Mask and selection layers never share a mask any more. Copying or inverting one of them used to change the others along with it, and after a mask edit they all looked the same again. Every layer now carries its own mask, whether it comes from Duplicate or from New mask layer.
-
Inverting a mask layer sticks. Inverting only flipped what you saw; the layer kept its old shape, so the change was gone as soon as you clicked another layer. Making a person mask and an inverted copy of it for the background works now. The soft edge slider had the same gap and now reaches the layer too.
-
"New mask layer" and "New selection layer" work while a layer is already open. They used to do nothing at all in that case; now each press gives you another layer with the same shape, as often as you like.
-
Starting a new mask works while another one is open. "New" in the mask tool used to keep painting into the mask you were editing; it now begins a fresh one, and "add" still goes into the open mask.
-
The icons in the collapsed tool bar sit evenly again. At every group boundary they were a touch closer together than elsewhere.
-
The layers panel no longer empties itself. Going back and forth between a group and its layers could leave the panel blank until something rebuilt it. Should it ever happen again, the panel rebuilds itself instead of staying empty.
-
Clicking next to the layers panel really lets go of everything. Layers added to the selection with Ctrl stayed silently selected after clicking into the empty panel area - the marks were gone, but "Delete selected layers" still hit them.
-
Removing a part of a mask removes it from the brush too. After dropping a gradient from a mask you were editing, the next brush stroke quietly painted the dropped gradient's coverage back in.
-
Brush corrections on a gradient now survive scaling, rotating and mirroring. They used to follow only when the layer was moved; any other transformation left them sitting at the old spot while the gradient went along.
-
Bending and cropping work together now. A grid, line or warp distortion on a cropped or rotated picture moved the picture correctly but sent the objects to the wrong place; they follow the same path now.
-
A curved selection survives freezing. Freezing a selection on a strongly warped picture used to cut the mask off at the curved edges.
-
Moving layers is light again. With several layers selected, dragging lagged behind the cursor and the application kept clearing memory while you worked. It follows the cursor now, and when zoomed in only the part you can see is redrawn.
-
Dragging a warp handle is smooth. The live preview redrew for every single mouse move; it now keeps up with the screen instead.
-
A Photoshop file written here now carries everything you did. Denoising, retouching, removed objects and brush strokes were missing in the exported file - every other program showed the picture without them.
-
Reopening a PSD written here no longer doubles the edit. Exposure, crop and the rest were applied a second time on top of the already finished picture, so everything looked too strong. Text and shapes stay editable as before, and files written before this fix open correctly too.
-
Bending a picture keeps its edges clean. Grid, line and warp distortions left stair steps along hard edges; those are gone.
-
Editing a mask on a distorted picture is quick again. On large photos it could take minutes; now it is a moment.
-
A city that exists locally and on the Immich server can be filtered locally again. Clicking the local entry used to open the server view instead and silently drop the local filters you had set.
-
A graduated mask on a layer follows that layer again. Move a layer whose mask is a linear or radial gradient and the mask now moves with it. Until now only a painted mask followed; a mask made purely of gradients stayed where it was, so the layer slid out from under its own cut-out. Brush corrections on a gradient come along when the layer is moved.
-
A click next to a selection lets go of it. In the move mode of the selection and mask tools, clicking outside the selection now drops it - before, it stayed behind while you were already working on something else, and clicking a layer left the marching ants sitting around nothing.
