This release lets you put two photos side by side and look at exactly the same spot in both, and it makes the colour tools tell you where you have already been.

What's new

  • Compare two photos side by side. Pick two images in the gallery and choose Compare, and the viewer puts them next to each other. One zoom applies to both, and dragging one moves the other with it, so you always see the same part of both pictures. Click a picture to give it the focus — the info panel switches to that photo's data.
  • Or pin the photo you are looking at. The new pin button in the viewer holds the current photo and opens the split view. Filmstrip, arrow keys and mouse wheel then page the right side onward while the pinned photo stays on the left - the natural way through a series of near-identical shots. Pin again or Esc returns to the single photo.
  • The colour mixer shows which colours you have touched. The wheel carries a dot on every band that is no longer at zero. Until now only the selected band was visible, so a preset that bent four colours looked exactly like one that changed nothing.
  • The tone curve does the same for its channels. A dot next to RGB, R, G, B or L means there is a curve in that channel, even while you are looking at another one.

Smaller things

  • Painting a mask costs noticeably less. The red overlay is no longer rebuilt from scratch with every movement of the mouse, so brushing stays smooth on large photos. The result on screen is unchanged.
  • The red mask overlay gets out of the way at the right moment. With a mask layer selected it stays on screen in the adjustment tools, so you can see where the correction will land — and disappears as soon as you move the first slider, because from then on it covers what you are judging. Object, retouch, brush and transform tools hide it straight away.
  • DNG files that already contain a finished picture are no longer blown out. Some DNGs wrap an already-developed image rather than sensor data - converted from a JPEG, or written by a scanner. They were being developed a second time and came out far too bright. They now open as they are; real raw files are unaffected.
  • Fit-to-window really fits again. Resizing the window, folding a side panel in or out, or cropping a photo changed what had to fit, but the picture stayed at its old zoom while the control still claimed Fit. It now re-fits by itself, and always scale really does scale up to the area. A zoom you set yourself is left alone.
  • Comparing is offered only where it works. Compare appears in the gallery menus only when exactly two photos are selected, and the pin button stays off for Immich photos, which the comparison cannot load yet.
