Bare 1.0.1
A fix release on Chromium 156.0.8078.25, the same as 1.0.0. The series is now 164 patches.
Which APK should I download?
Bare-1.0.1-arm64-v8a.apkis for most Android phones from the last several years. If you are
unsure, take this one.Bare-1.0.1-armeabi-v7a.apkis for 32-bit ARM devices only. It is not lighter or better on a
64-bit phone.
What's new since 1.0.0
- Samsung phones on One UI 9 no longer restart. On Android 17, Samsung's kernel crashes when Bare's
GPU process turns on Chromium's Landlock sandbox, and the whole phone reboots. Bare now skips that
sandbox on Samsung phones running Android 17 or later, and keeps it everywhere else. We'll narrow or
remove this once Samsung ships a fixed kernel. Thanks to everyone who reported it and tested the
fix (#82). - Protected video plays on Android 16 and later phones whose kernel has Landlock. On those
phones the same sandbox stopped Android's DRM library from loading, so Widevine video never
started. The GPU process can now read Android's system libraries, and the sandbox stays on. We
tested this on an Android 17 emulator, not on 32-bit phones. Some services, Netflix among them, don't allow any browser on
Android to play their videos, so they still won't play in Bare. - Google sites open in their mobile layout again. 1.0.0 meant to show only the Chrome Web Store
as a desktop site, but the setting it stored covered every google.com site. 1.0.1 removes it once,
on first launch. - The Chrome Web Store still installs extensions, at your phone's width. Extension pages fit the
screen, and "Add to Chrome" works as before. The store's front page and category pages are still
laid out for a desktop, so some rows run off the side of the screen. - Choose the User-Agent. Settings > Developer options > User agent lets you present Bare to
websites as Chrome on Android, Linux, Windows, Mac or ChromeOS, Edge, Firefox or Safari, or as a
string you type. Chrome and Edge choices send matching client hints; the others send none. The
change applies after a restart, and Desktop site is greyed out while a choice is set. Sites can
still tell it isn't really that browser by other means.
Upgrading from 1.0.0
Install 1.0.1 over your existing Bare. Do not uninstall first. Tabs, history, bookmarks,
extensions and settings carry over.
The welcome appears once after upgrading. It is a review: your choices are already filled in, and
anything you leave alone stays as it was.
If you installed the 1.0.1 test build from #82, this release installs over it too.
