This release updates BI Developer Extensions for Visual Studio 2017 to be compatible with the latest version of SSDT and also provides support for Visual Studio 2019. Please install from the Visual Studio Marketplace.
This release now gracefully handles when not all SSDT extensions (SSAS, SSIS, and SSRS) are installed. All SSIS features have been tested and fixed so they work even when only the SSIS extension has been installed. Similarly all SSAS features have been tested to work when only the SSAS extension is installed. Under Tools... Options... BIDS Helper... Version there is a screen showing which extensions and versions have been installed to aid in troubleshooting. It also warns you when you need to upgrade your SSAS/SSIS/SSRS extensions to a version that's supported.
This release also switches BI Developer Extensions to load somewhat asynchronously. The impact is that BI Developer Extensions menu items and features will only be available about 15 seconds after Visual Studio project opens. We are taking feedback (on the Issues tab) on this change.
For Visual Studio 2017, ensure you have the latest version of SSDT installed (version 15.9.0 or higher) for Visual Studio 2017. Then in Visual Studio 2017 go to Tools… Extensions and Updates… Updates tab… then ensure you install any updates to Microsoft Analysis Services Projects, Microsoft Reporting Services Projects, or Microsoft Integration Services Projects. This release is designed to work with version 2.8.11 SSAS extension or higher, version 2.5.6 SSRS extension or higher, and 2.1 SSIS extension or higher. It has been tested as compatible with 2.8.14 SSAS and 2.5.7 SSRS and will hopefully work automatically with newer extension versions.
If you are on the 15.8.2 version of SSDT in Visual Studio 2017 and can't upgrade, then consider installing BI Developer Extensions 2.2.1 instead then disabling "automatically upgrade this extension" in Tools... Extensions and Updates.
