Kanto Gear 4.0.5 — Gear on your phone

Kanto Gear can now live on your phone, with optional touch controls for the game beside it. This release also rebuilds Discovery into clear presets and individual switches, and makes Silph Store easier to scroll by touch.

New: Phone / Browser display — experimental

  • Choose Display Mode → Phone / Browser, put your phone and game device on the same Wi-Fi, and scan the QR code. Tap Connect: the QR handles the credential, so you do not need to enter a PIN. Opening the displayed address and entering the one-time code also works.
  • Keep the game on your main display and use Gear on your phone. Touches, swipes and Notes input work through the browser.
  • Optional game controls include a sliding D-pad, A/B, Start/Select and Gen 3 L/R. Multitouch lets you hold buttons while steering or using Gear.
  • The browser has matching Light/Dark Pokégear and C-Gear designs, portrait and landscape layouts, optional fullscreen, button sizing, press animations and haptics where the browser supports vibration. Controls and the surrounding frame can be hidden.
  • Choose Classic, Left-handed or either one-hand preset. Custom → Arrange lets you drag and resize individual controls and the Gear screen, with snapping guides and overlap checks. Portrait and landscape keep separate arrangements.
  • Browser preferences are temporary unless Remember settings is enabled. Forget saved settings clears them. Pairing credentials are never saved in these preferences.
  • The in-game pairing card follows your Gear theme and shows the QR, manual code, connection state and expiry countdown.
  • Video uses lossless frame changes, background encoding and browser decoding, and paced presentation. Captures follow game frames, and delayed display acknowledgements no longer stop capture. Queues and buffers are bounded so slow connections cannot build an unlimited backlog.

Pairing and privacy: This is a local, unencrypted HTTP/WebSocket connection for a trusted private network, not an internet service. No account, relay, external QR service or analytics is used. One browser can pair at a time; credentials expire after five minutes and are single-use. Visible Gear content, including open notes, is sent to that browser. Disconnecting, leaving the browser or changing display mode releases held controls; changing mode stops the server.

Use the latest official Gen1Recomp and allow Kanto Gear's Network and Compute permissions. Streaming is experimental: feedback on devices, browsers and Wi-Fi conditions is welcome. It is not a promise of perfectly smooth streaming on every connection. Setup, controls and privacy details.

Discovery: choose exactly what Gear reveals

  • Vanilla is now strict: original-game information only. It hides the live area map, encounter guides, extra battle hints, completion totals and hidden partner values. Touch controls, ordinary game data and your own notes remain available.
  • Guide provides research and battle help for visited places, while keeping unvisited locations, future tasks and hidden partner values concealed. Hidden items still need to be scanned or collected.
  • Everything enables every information switch without unlocking anything in the game.
  • Custom starts from your current preset and offers 30 separate switches, grouped under Exploration, Pokédex, Battle, Partner Data and Stamps. Each has an explanation.
  • Control maps, encounter information, trainer/item checklists, gifts, berries, unvisited places and future tasks separately. Dex descriptions, types, species numbers, learnsets, evolutions and habitats have their own switches. Battle hints, catch estimates, friendship, genes, training, egg progress and egg contents are independent too.
  • The same disclosure rules apply across apps, widgets, battle views and partner summaries. Caught Dex entries and information the original game normally provides remain available where appropriate.
  • Existing independently disabled battle helpers are preserved as Custom choices during the upgrade instead of being silently switched back on. Changing presets and resetting settings use consistent defaults.

Settings and touch fixes

  • Native Recomp mod options and Gear's Options app now share persistent values, including hosts that do not expose a native option setter to mods.
  • Display Mode is the first native mod option. You can leave Phone mode through Recomp → Mods → Kanto Gear → Options even without your phone. Reset Defaults selects Separate Screens.
  • Options with visibility rules unsupported by older native menus remain accessible there; Gear retains its contextual filtering.
  • Silph Store's Buy and Library lists support vertical content swipes and a draggable page rail. Short touches still select entries, while drags scroll without accidentally buying or opening an item. One-page lists and confirmation overlays do not trigger scrolling.
  • Updated README with Discovery, wireless setup, recovery instructions, privacy information and QR-library credits. New labels without a supplied translation fall back to English.

Validation

  • 121 automated suite runs across Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen and Emerald using official Recomp 0.3.74 fixtures.
  • Separate pairing, transport, lossless video and browser/controller tests, including layout editing, rotation, disconnect cleanup and three reconnect cycles against the actual local LÖVE server.
  • 90 LÖVE-encoded video frames reconstructed byte for byte in the browser; Light/Dark Pokégear and C-Gear previews checked for Gen 1/2.
  • Release ZIP built from the committed source and every packaged file verified against that commit. Existing image and font assets are unchanged.
  • Asset scanner: no prohibited files; one similarity flag for the unchanged generated font atlas against a tiny paper sprite. Manual comparison confirms different content. Font sources and licenses remain documented and bundled.

Gen 3 still welcomes broader playthrough testing. Please include your game, Recomp version, device, browser and other active mods when reporting a problem.
