Intel GPU Monitoring

Intel GPUs are finally supported! This long-requested feature had been on hold for a lack of hardware to test on: a huge thanks to @Kseen715 for implementing and testing it. [#123] [#192] [#228] [#239]

Thanks also to @psychaos999, whose #244 inspired the setup instructions and the warning shown when intel_gpu_top is missing.

To start monitoring your Intel GPU, switch on its Monitor option in Preferences → GPU → General. Here's what you get:

  • Out of the box: with the i915 driver, both Discrete and Integrated GPUs show their frequency and an estimate of their activity, without any additional package. Integrated GPUs also show the CPU package temperature, since they share the CPU die.

  • With intel_gpu_top: installing intel-gpu-tools adds the activity of every engine (Render/3D, Video, Blitter...), the top processes with the memory they use and, on integrated GPUs, the memory usage and the power. To read the GPU counters as a normal user, intel_gpu_top needs the cap_perfmon capability (not enough on Debian): the Welcome page of the preferences warns when it can't access them.

Check the documentation for more details.

  • Not supported yet: GPUs using the newer xe driver, such as Lunar Lake, Battlemage and Panther Lake. [#222]

Since this is a major change and it could only be tested on a limited set of hardware, we recommend you to test and report any issues you may encounter: Astra Monitor issues.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed the extension failing to load on GNOME 51 with Error: No property vertical on StBoxLayout, by using the orientation property on GNOME 48+ in place of the removed vertical property. [#240] [#246] (Thanks to @domotick)
  • Fixed the GPU popups (activity, VRAM, top processes and sensors) losing rows: once the number of entries went down, the hidden rows were not shown again when it grew back. [#239] (Thanks to @Kseen715)
  • Fixed the network top processes not noticing the nethogs capabilities granted with setcap, or lost after a package update, until the extension was restarted: they are now checked again when the network menu opens, only if the nethogs binary has changed. [#244] (Thanks to @psychaos999)
  • Fixed the storage top processes (all system processes) showing the IO percentage in front of the command, like 0.00 % firefox, with iotop-c and with the Python iotop when delay accounting is enabled, and truncating the decimals when iotop-c prints them with a comma, as in Italian or German. [#244] (Thanks to @psychaos999)
