v4.0.0-beta.1 — Introducing Rayburst and Native Media Downloads

pre-releaseone hour ago

Note

The first release under the Rayburst name. Rayburst 4.0.0-beta.1 introduces the new desktop identity and native streaming-media downloads, paired with Rayburst Connect 2.0.0. This is a beta release.

Caution

A fresh installation is recommended when moving from Motrix Next. The application identifier, installation names and data directories have changed. In-app updating may fail to replace the old application or leave both applications installed. Previous settings, task state and history are not imported automatically.

Before installing

  1. Finish active downloads and recordings in the previous application. Keep a backup of its application data and any unfinished downloads before uninstalling.
  2. Quit the previous application, including its tray process. Uninstall it, then install the Rayburst package for your operating system and architecture. Keep downloaded files and your backup.
  3. Configure Rayburst again. Install Rayburst Connect 2.0.0 and reconnect it using Rayburst's Extension API address and secret. Disable the previous extension to avoid competing download interception.

This beta uses the prerelease update channel; the stable channel remains separate. Automatic updates across the brand migration are not a substitute for the installation steps above. Linux packages require glibc 2.35 or newer and a compatible system C++ runtime, matching Ubuntu 22.04.

What's changed

Native streaming-media downloads

  • Bundle Aria2 Next 2.8.0 on all six desktop targets. HLS and MPEG-DASH manifests are inspected and downloaded inside the engine, using GPAC, libcurl, OpenSSL and FFmpeg.
  • Select video, audio and subtitle tracks before downloading. Save compatible output as MP4, Matroska or subtitle-only WebVTT, with finite time ranges aligned to media segments.
  • Record live streams with a duration limit or use Finish recording and save. Live tasks show recorded duration; finalization does not invent a completion percentage.
  • Pause and retry media tasks through the engine's recovery state. Track selection stays attached to the same task, and restored tasks do not repeatedly open selection dialogs.
  • Receive browser-captured manifests, compatible fragment collections and recordings from Rayburst Connect. Inspection and confirmation share one task, without a second desktop selection prompt.

Rayburst identity and interface

  • Introduce the Rayburst name, logo, application identity, package names, website and localized copy.
  • Use a softer purple default through the existing Material Design color system. Empty download lists can display the brand mark; the setting can be turned off.
  • Refresh task snapshots every 500 ms and simplify task refresh coordination. Media tasks expose recording, selection and retry actions alongside ordinary download controls.

Download ownership and recovery

  • Move ordinary task submission, confirmation receipts and history ownership into Rust. Browser handoff and completion persistence remain available when the main window is closed.
  • Preserve submission identities when replies are lost, so reconciliation does not create a second download. Keep browser credentials scoped to their observed request origins.
  • Let the engine resolve filenames and output collisions. Preserve browser filename hints and media titles across restart.
  • Include the engine fix for BitTorrent progress freezing after hash failures or file-selection changes.

Media limits

DRM, subtitle translation and transcoding are not supported. Container compatibility depends on the selected codecs. Fragment collections must contain compatible media in playback order; this is not an arbitrary video-joining tool. Live recovery cannot restore segments the server has already removed.

See the media guide and engine release notes.
