What's new
HDR on ultrawide screens fixed. With HDR on at 5120x1440 (or any wide resolution), the HUD and menus were stretched over the whole screen. With HDR the game draws its HUD into a buffer of its own, which the port did not know. Now the HUD and menus stay 16:9 in the middle, as without HDR. Thanks to the player on Reddit who found it.
Sun glare is back (#109). The sun flares and the glare when you look into the sun were missing on every track. Fixed by @Pixxel123 in #132: the game measures how much of the sun is visible with a small chain of pictures, and the port did not fill all of them.
Out of video memory on big graphics cards (#116). The port started to free video memory only at a fixed limit set at start (19 GB on a 24 GB card). When other programs used video memory too, the card ran out first, and the game closed while loading a race. The limit now follows what Windows gives the game.
Fewer crashes after long sessions (#107). After hours of play, the game could close with "Trying to unregister an already unregistered image". The port now skips that step and writes a line to the log.
Shuffle that remembers (#124). Shuffle now plays every song once before any song repeats, also over several sessions. Before, each start shuffled again, so with many songs some never played.
Player name (#129). Set your name on the launcher's Game page. Before, the game always got "Player".
Mouse in the Insert menu (#117, thanks @Uramekus). The menu uses the normal mouse pointer, so it shows on every system. It hides after 2 seconds without moving.
Better bug reports (#113). If the game stays on a black screen at start, it now writes its threads to user\last_run.log after 90 seconds. Please attach that log.
Linux build (#126, thanks @Pixxel123): the code builds with FFmpeg 6 too.
From v0.2.49: invisible ships and missing paint fixed, loading errors in the log. From v0.2.48: crash in big races above 2560 wide fixed, 2880x1800, songs change at loading screens.
All features
New here? This is everything the port can do, from every version so far.
The game
- A native PC port: the game's own code runs on your processor, with no emulator. WipEout HD, HD Fury and 2048 are all in.
- Works with the US (CUSA07671, update 01.07) and EU (CUSA05670) versions. You need your own dump of the game from your own PS4. No game files are included.
- Correct game speed at any frame rate, and the shield, effects and camera shakes behave above 60 FPS as they do at 60.
- Saves work, and the launcher makes a backup of them at every start (Game → Save backups → Restore). The saves can have a folder of their own, for example a network share for two PCs (Game → Save data folder).
- Eliminator target up to 2000 points in Racebox, or up to 10000 with Game → Eliminator target limit.
Picture
- Render resolutions: 720p, 900p, Native (1080p), 1440p, 4K, 1920x1200, 2560x1600 and 2880x1800 (16:10), 2560x1080, 3440x1440, 3840x1600, 5120x1440 (32:9, beta) and 5120x2160. On wide and 16:10 screens the HUD and menus stay 16:9 in the middle, with HDR too. 4K and the 5120-wide sizes need more than 8 GB of video memory.
- Windowed, Borderless or Fullscreen; VSync; HDR (when Windows has HDR on for your screen).
- Anisotropic filtering, sharpening (RCAS), and a switch for the game's multisampling.
- Texture quality (Full, Medium or Low): Low loads the largest textures smaller, about 1 GB less video memory in a race, for 4 GB graphics cards.
- Temporal anti-aliasing (experimental): FSR 3.1 on every GPU, and DLAA (NVIDIA DLSS) on RTX cards with one download in the launcher. Switch it live in the game: Insert → Image.
- Upscaling: the race drawn at a lower resolution and scaled up by FSR 3.1 or DLSS (Quality, Balanced, Performance), for more FPS. The HUD stays sharp.
- PS4 Pro mode (experimental): Graphics → PS4 Pro mode.
- F12 saves a screenshot. F8 hides the HUD and menus for clean pictures (also Insert → Game → Hide HUD).
Performance
- Up to 240 FPS. Frame rate limit 30, 40, 60, 100, 120, 144, 165, 240 or Unlimited, also changed live in the game. With VSync on and a limit that matches the monitor, frames follow its refresh.
- Performance overlay: FPS, frame time, GPU, CPU, RAM and video memory.
- Options for frames queued, shader loading in the background, the graphics card to use, and stream buffer memory.
Sound and music
- The game's music and its 3D sound effects. Game music volume goes up to 300% (launcher Music page, or Insert → Music).
- Your own music: MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV or M4A files (subfolders too) replace the game's music. Launcher Music page, and Insert → Music in the game: pick a song, skip, shuffle, volume. Each song is leveled, and the songs follow the game: they wait during loading, fade out with the game's music, and a new song starts with each race (or the same song goes on, with Keep the song between races). Songs in a menu subfolder play only in the menus. Shuffle plays every song once before any song repeats, even over several sessions. Turn Play my music off for the original music.
Controls
- Gamepad, or keyboard and mouse. Every button can be remapped. Vibration strength and stick deadzone. With several gamepads, choose which one plays.
- Split-screen: a second gamepad plays as player 2.
- Motion controls: the game's own tilt steering works with a gamepad that has a gyro (DualShock 4, DualSense).
- Racer button layout, as WipEout 2048 on the PS Vita: R2 accelerates, L2 brakes.
Cheats (launcher → Cheats page)
- Unlock all HD and HD Fury events.
- Top rank in 2048 (rank 50).
- Unlock all ships: every HD and HD Fury ship and livery (Tigron too), and all 20 WipEout 2048 ships.
- Van Über team: the Van Über team in WipEout HD and HD Fury.
- VR ships outside VR: the VR HD and VR Fury liveries can be picked on a normal screen, once they are unlocked.
- The cheats only work while they are on; your save keeps your own progress.
Launcher and menus
- In the game, Insert (or R3 + L2) opens the port's menu: Game, Image, Performance, Overlay and Music tabs, and Quit game.
- The launcher in 13 languages. The game language list matches your game version.
- Mods: change textures, sounds and text without touching your game files, with a load order and presets.
- After a crash, the launcher shows where the log file is, for a bug report.
- Updates itself: a pop-up at start shows a new version and installs it with one click, and Check for updates sits next to PLAY.
- Desktop shortcut and Add to Steam (with pictures).
- Player name (launcher Game page): your name in the game's profile instead of "Player".
Not yet
- Linux: build from source (no package yet; the AppImage build is being set up). No VR. No online play yet. Not every event is tested.
Download
New here: download wipeout-windows.zip, extract it and open WipEout.exe.
Already have the port: a pop-up at start shows the new version; click UPDATE NOW. Or click Check for updates (next to PLAY; on versions before v0.2.32 it is on the Advanced page) → Update. Your saves and settings stay.
