v0.2.20 - fix: black menu and dark races after a race

What's new

Fixed: the menu (or the race) turning black after a race. Reported in #27 and #42, and on Reddit.

  • After a race, the menu background could turn black, with parts of the menu missing. Some races also started dark and got brighter slowly.
  • The cause: to save video memory, the port threw away some small pictures the game keeps from frame to frame, like its auto exposure (scene brightness). They came back empty, so the picture went black.
  • The port now keeps those small pictures. They use almost no memory.
  • It happened most at higher resolutions (1440p, 4K, ultrawide), because those use more video memory.

The update pop-up is more reliable. At start, the launcher now asks GitHub up to 3 times, so a short network drop does not hide a new version.

All features

New here? This is everything the port can do, from every version so far.

The game

  • A native PC port: the game's own code runs on your processor, with no emulator. WipEout HD, HD Fury and 2048 are all in.
  • Works with the US (CUSA07671, update 01.07) and EU (CUSA05670) versions. You need your own dump of the game from your own PS4. No game files are included.
  • Correct game speed at any frame rate.
  • Saves work, and the launcher makes a backup of them at every start (Game → Save backups → Restore).

Picture

  • Render resolutions: Native (1080p), 1440p, 4K, 2560x1080, 3440x1440, 5120x1440 (32:9, beta) and 5120x2160. On wide screens the HUD and menus stay 16:9 in the middle. 4K and the 5120-wide sizes need more than 8 GB of video memory.
  • Windowed, Borderless or Fullscreen; VSync; HDR (when Windows has HDR on for your screen).
  • Anisotropic filtering, sharpening (RCAS), and a switch for the game's multisampling.
  • FSR 3.1 anti-aliasing (experimental): smoother edges, F10 to compare in the game.
  • PS4 Pro mode (experimental): Graphics → PS4 Pro mode.
  • F12 saves a screenshot.

Performance

  • Up to 240 FPS. Frame rate limit 30, 60, 100, 120, 240 or Unlimited, also changed live in the game.
  • Performance overlay: FPS, frame time, GPU, CPU, RAM and video memory.
  • Options for frames queued, shader loading in the background, the graphics card to use, and stream buffer memory.

Sound and music

  • The game's music and its 3D sound effects.
  • Your own music: MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV or M4A files (subfolders too) replace the game's music. Launcher Music page, and Insert → Music in the game: pick a song, skip, shuffle, volume. Each song is leveled. Turn Play my music off for the original music.

Controls

  • Gamepad, or keyboard and mouse. Every button can be remapped. Vibration strength.

Cheats (launcher → Cheats page)

  • Unlock all HD and HD Fury events.
  • Top rank in 2048 (rank 50).
  • Unlock all ships: every HD and HD Fury ship and livery, and all 20 WipEout 2048 ships (not the VR versions or the Tigron and Van-Uber DLC).
  • The cheats only work while they are on; your save keeps your own progress.

Launcher and menus

  • In the game, Insert (or R3 + L2) opens the port's menu: Game, Image, Performance, Overlay and Music tabs.
  • The launcher in 13 languages. The game language list matches your game version.
  • Mods: change textures, sounds and text without touching your game files, with a load order and presets.
  • Updates itself: a pop-up at start shows a new version and installs it with one click.
  • Desktop shortcut and Add to Steam (with pictures).

Not yet

  • Linux: build from source (no package yet). No VR. The Tigron and Van-Uber DLC ships are not available. Not every event is tested.

Download

New here: download wipeout-windows.zip, extract it and open WipEout.exe.
