Release notes for v3.4.2
See what changed, and set it up without a config file
Settings now covers scanning
Everything about how scanning works used to be config file or environment
only. If you never opened a shell, you could not change it. That gap is
closed. Service detection, scan interval, storage limits and the networks list
are all on the Settings page.
Your config.ini is never rewritten. What you change in Settings is kept
separately and layered on top, so the file you maintain by hand stays yours.
Snapshots, and comparing them
Save the state of your network, then compare it against a later one and see
exactly what is new, what is gone, and what moved. Useful after you add
hardware, and useful when you want proof that nothing appeared overnight.
Expected devices
Mark the devices that belong on your network. Anything that shows up outside
that list is flagged, and anything from the list that goes missing is flagged
too.
Backup and restore
Your device list, labels, groups and notes export to a single file and come
back from it.
Network report
Generate your whole network as one shareable file.
Custom groups
Create your own groups, rename the built-in ones, delete the ones you do not
use. Renaming a group keeps every device in it and keeps its place in the
list. Deleting one never deletes devices.
IPv6 addresses are visible
Where a device has an IPv6 address, it now shows in the IP cell and you can
click it to copy. Scanning is still IPv4.
Storage limits are enforced
max_devices and retention_days did nothing before. They work now. Devices you
have labelled, grouped or written notes on are always kept, and so is anything
currently online.
Fixes
Windows scans reported the wrong tool. A failed scan on Windows said "arp-scan
not found", which is a tool with no Windows build at all, so the message was
useless no matter what the real problem was. Windows now gets the actual nmap
error, with a hint that tells you whether nmap is missing or installed but not
working. Nmap is also found in its normal install locations instead of only
on PATH, which is the real cause when the installer updates PATH but an
already-running shell or service does not see it. Reported by @chraso,
reproduced and verified on Windows 11.
Label column was too narrow. It was 5% of the table, so most names were cut
off. Label is now the widest text column, a clipped value fades instead of
hard-cutting, and hovering shows the whole thing. Reported by @dax29.
Click to copy did nothing in some browsers. On Chrome, Edge and Brave, copying
from a page served over plain HTTP silently failed while still showing
"copied". Those browsers block it and report success anyway. There is now a
fallback that works, and the cell shows you what was copied. Reported by
@GrafDogi.
allow_insecure said the wrong thing. With it on, the startup output still
talked about passwords that were no longer being used. It now says plainly
which password is being ignored and why. Reported by @devra1.
Sorting by Label and Group. Both columns sort now. Reported by @wmgordon3.
Contributing
This release adds CONTRIBUTING.md, a code of conduct, and issue and pull
request templates.
